Firefighter Charged with Arson
HUNTINGTOWN - 11/14/2008
Prince George’s County Fire Investigators have arrested a Calvert man who is an 18 year veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department and charged him with crimes stemming from a set fire in Adelphi.
On Nov. 1, at approximately 6:30a.m., an arson fire occurred on the exterior of a commercial establishment in the 2500 block of University Boulevard that caused an estimated $1,000 in damages. Fire Investigators were able to identify a suspect and on Nov. 13, and arrested Michael D. Murphy, 42 of Huntingtown.
Murphy has been charged with:
• First-degree arson; Felony, carries a maximum penalty of $50,000 and/or 30 years in jail.
• Second-degree arson; Felony, carries a maximum penalty of $30,000 and/or 20 years in jail.
• Malicious burning; Felony, carries a maximum penalty of $5,000 and/or 5 years in jail.
Murphy is a firefighter who joined the department back in 1989 with his most recent assignment being the Chillum-Adelphi Fire/EMS Station #834. Following his arrest he was placed on leave without pay. He is currently being held on $150,000 bond at the Department of Corrections in Upper Marlboro.
