Prostitute Exposes Herself to Passing Motorists

On May 10, at 9:25 a.m., Deputies responded to the area of Great Mills Road and Lexwood Drive after a citizen reported a female subject exposing herself to passing motorist on Great Mills Road. 

Dfc. J. Maletto arrived on the scene and observed Sheila C. Vernon, 39 of no fixed address, standing in the roadway soliciting the operator of a motor vehicle, who she had stepped in front of, for sexual acts and exposing her breasts.

Vernon was placed under arrest, charged with prostitution, two counts of indecent exposure and incarcerated in the Detention Center pending an appearance before the District Court Commissioner.

There but for the Grace of God....
I, myself, living in the Park see these women on a daily basis. True, there are always other jobs that they get, but instead they choose a lifestyle that I am sure is nothing to be proud of or anything to write home about.

Everyone has a story, and most times we don't know what that story is. I can not imagine what would drive someone to do this (I'm guessing drugs) but she is not the first, nor will she be the last to degrade herself on the side of Great Mills Road.

I have mixed reactions to this story. On one hand I feel sorry for her, and perhaps her life that led her to make these choices. On the other hand, I feel that it's just plain nasty and do not want to explain to my Grandsons what that "crazy" lady is doing on the side of the road.

I know that these women get arrested, processed and then released. How about a mandatory self esteem class and maybe some real job training?

In the end, I guess I don't care what she or any of the other "ladies" (term used VERY loosely here) choose to do for their career, but do it behind closed doors. I don't want to have to see it every time I drive down town.

Just my opinion.

Wasn't Lexington Park voted one of the best small towns not too long ago??? Yeah I know this happened in Great Mills but they are close enough together it's all the same!!! Very classy!!!!

It is scary to think you worked in a doctor's office due to the fact of confidentiality. I feel really bad for this woman due to the fact she ticked/flicked off a reporter who happened to be there and now she has been posted for all to see no shoes and all. I do not approve of this type of work she does, I cannot judge her however that is not my place. My question is--was there nothing better to report on this day? Her aggressive behavior is a reflection of the struggle she carries. You speak with anyone on the street they will tell you they did not see themselves in this position growing up the did not aspire to become a escort. She has been doing this for years and years. She's been picked up NUMEROUS times and just let go. Getting arrested has probably become a joke to her I'm sure. She has been in and out of rehab only to start smoking crack AGAIN and AGAIN. She had a baby years ago that was a crack baby and died. She has 2 other kids that don't even claim her, and if they did...they would know exactly where to find her on great mills road. She did not grow up in foster care all of her life, she was offered help by family AND extended family MANY MANY times. She has been given up on, she is a lost cause. I don't feel sorry for her. You are all paying for her to continue her rehab stunts when the homeless shelters kick her out and she has no where else to go. She is a disgusting piece of trash and I feel no pity for her AT ALL. This is sad on so many levels ...
I mean, I understand where some people are coming from when they look at Sheila's criminal record and history of prostitution and substance abuse, and then say she's beyond hope. And it's true that this woman is responsible for the choices she's made, and that you can't help someone who doesn't want to change self-destructive habits.

At the same time, Ms. Vernon is still a person, a human being, and she must have some good qualities about her. Maybe this is naive, but my wish for today is that she will - sometime soon - begin to care enough about herself to find the strength to break the cycle of addiction to the hard drugs and selling her body to pay for them.

At 39, Sheila is fast approaching a turning point in her life. May she realize that the downside of 40 can still be good if she turns things around, but her current path is an unhappy one that can only lead to an early grave ... and misery for others along the way.

A friend of mine has done just that to seek a better future. Although she was never a prostitute, she was hooked on heroin for several years but is now staying sober to comply with her terms of probation, and she is trying to get healthy and normal again. May Ms. Vernon choose to do the same.

I've known Sheila since 2000. She has had her ups and downs, but you can't blame her for trying to do the right thing. Most businesses in Lexington Park and surrounding areas will not hire her for extensive criminal background. I used to see her once a week and take her to lunch. She is a really sweet girl once you get past the bad gossip. I don't know why people have a stigma towards those that have a active sex life. Just quit whining and let her live her life the way she wants too.

Then both parties get all work up bullying each others to get the last word please do not stress your self keep focus on the story on hand. And you do not need any degrees here to figure this story out. And if this lady has hiv and spreading it then local Police Dept and Health Dept. needs to used some common sense here. And to people buying or using her services then you are the risk taker here. But it her seek the help she needs if she wants it. There is drugs everyway you have to stay in charge of your life.

The whole her is totally sick. They need to put her some place for awhile. She need to see a shrink etc. LORD have mercy on her.
