UPDATE: Fatal Accident on Rt. 235 in The Area of Park Hall

On July 11, at approximately 2:44 p.m., a blue 2008 Mazda M3I driven by Royal Kessick III, 47 of Richmond, Va., was traveling northbound on Three Notch Road, north of Park Hall Road.  Hugo Gonzalez, 44 of St. Leonard, was riding a bicycle on the southbound shoulder of Three Notch Road heading towards Park Hall Road.  Kessick's vehicle crossed the southbound travel lane, onto the shoulder and into the path of Gonzalez's bicycle.  Gonzalez was struck by the vehicle and thrown into the grass adjacent to the roadway. Gonzales succumbed to his injuries.  Kessick's vehicle continued towards the wood line, struck a tree, overturned once and landing upright. 

Kessick was flown by Eagle 1 to Medstar.  Gonzalez was wearing a bicycle helmet.  Initial investigation indicates alcohol is not believed to be a contributing factor.  Members of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and assumed the investigation.

UPDATE 3:25 p.m.: TBN reports that the accident involved a single passenger Mazda 3 and a Bicyclist in the area of 20165 Three Notch Road. The adult bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. Three Notch Road is closed in both directions from just south of Park Hall Road to Hermanville Road. Local residents are being allowed to pass. All other traffic is being diverted to either Park Hall or Hermanville Roads while the scene is under investigation.

2:57 p.m. on Saturday, July 11: TheBAYNET.com is en route to the scene of a fatal accident on Rt. 235 in the area of Park Hall. According to sources, at least one victim has been declared dead on the scene and first responders are working to save other victims. No other information is available at this time.

This wasn't the dude that was on a bike that looked like a boat was it? I seen him earlier, and you can barely see him. His helm blends in with the boat over top of the bike. It was a weird set up.

I consider Hugo to be a close friend, and I know that he was an experienced bicyclist. As far as the very first comment on this chain, I doubt that he had any kind of "boat-shaped bike". That is evident from the included pictures of the bike, unfortunately. The car that hit him crossed into oncoming traffic and traveled into the opposite shoulder. I don't think visibility of Hugo had anything to do with it. What a tragic loss for everyone involved, most especially Hugo's family. My condolences to all.

TERRIBLE
Wow I wonder exactly what happended. The bike riders are usually pretty visible.

More bad news today I heard a 21 yr old male shot himself in Ridge and was not breathing. More to come I am sure. Don't know if it was intentional or not. Suicide in this world to day is way out of control.

how horrible!
I had just driven thru this area about an hour before that time...I remember seeing a cyclist..oh, this is just sad as he**..rip dude..there will be alot of ?'s about this!!

Yea, I thought about that when I wrote the comment, all the family killings because of the economy and it's seems to always be the men doing the dirty deed. Just so sad killing your own family and then kill yourself.

Park Hall Rd
Im on that road all the time and there are really some crazy drivers on that road. People are always speeding and trying to pass one another. I think the police should be checking that area for crazy drivers more often. I also see someone on a bike almost everytime I go on that road and not once have I seen any of them do anything wrong... This is really sad..

Seen a state trooper this morning with someone pulled over. Not sure for what, my radar detector wasn't going off but he could have been shooting it with his hand at random times.

of the worst roads for drivers. People speed between traffic lights. My question is,..why in the blue he** would you ride your bike on such a road? There are other, safer roads. Either way drivers and bikers need to pay attention.

Cars v. Bicycles on 235
I sometimes ride with a group on that part of Rt235. There have been times when drivers are impatient and pull out into the opposite lane to pass a line of cars and then see another car coming at them. If they can't get back in the proper lane they'll pop over onto the opposite shoulder. And that's when you... riding your bike on that shoulder ...get really puckered up! I've seen this more than once.

I ride there.
I ride that section 3 times a week around lunchtime. I'd always considered that area pretty safe. > 2,000 miles last year and three near-misses, but all on Rt 5.

This is absolutely no surprise! The people around here have what I like to call the "I'm more important than you" attitude. They dont feel like they have to wait on you so they go around because they are more important. See it all the time on 235 near St. Andrew's Church. People dont want to wait in line so they race up the right lane that ends after St. Andrew's Church and try to cut in front. Bet a cell phone was involved too!!!!

No safe haven....
I live right over near spring ridge middle school and often walk down a side road. I get nervous just crossing the street to go on my walk. Drivers on that road pay no attention to anyone but themselves. Please....pay attention to your surroundings. This was ANOTHER preventable accident.

I WAS WORKING FOR A COMPANY OUT OF CALVERT COUNTY...I TRAVELED FROM MAINE TO MIAMI AND AS FAR WEST AS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER..TO SAY THE LEAST ALOT OF DRIVING MILES..
OUT OF ALL THOSE MILES I DROVE.. EVERY TIME I RETURNED TO CHARLES OR CALVERT COUNTY I HAD NEAR MISS AUTO ACCIDENTS ON AVERAGE WITHIN 15 MINUTES OF CROSSING A COUNTY LINE, CAUSED BY OTHER NEGLENT DRIVERS. AND RARELY HAD A NEAR MISS IN OTHER STATES !!!WHAT A HORRIBLE WAY TO DIE...

So sad!
I mean I've been on that road atleast once a week for the past 20 years.. I grew up down there and I always see people jogging out there or riding their bikes... I dont think its so dangerous because that road has wide shoulders theres enough space for walking and bike riding there. But like rumblebee85 said the drivers really dont pay any attention to anyone on that road.. Ive had cars pass me up on that road while there were cars in the other lane coming head on..

want to say to the Gonzalez family and all who knew him! We are sorry for their loss of their loving son, family member, friend, colleaque....
