Mechanicsville Couple Charged With Child Abuse

Detectives from the St. Mary’s County Bureau of Criminal Investigations and investigators from the St. Mary’s County Department of Social Services, Child Protective Services, initiated a joint investigation regarding allegations of suspected child abuse involving a 10 year old child.Following a physical examination by medical personnel the child was observed to have bruises on multiple areas of the body which had been caused by the suspects.The child was subsequently removed from the residence and placed in foster care.

Following a review of the case with the State’s Attorney’s Office, on April 26, 2012, William T. Smith Jr., age 27 and Brandi G. Smith, age 30, both of Mechanicsville, Maryland were arrested by detectives, charged with 2nd Degree Child Abuse, 2nd Degree Assault and incarcerated in the St. Mary’s County Detention Center pending an appearance before a District Court Commissioner. Both were later released by the commissioner on personal recognizance.
