Severe Storms Slam Southern Maryland
Waldorf, MD - 6/30/2012
By TheBAYNET Staff
Severe storms, fueled by record warm conditions, tore through the area on Friday night knocking down utility poles, trees and knocking out power to tens of thousands of residents. Over 40,000 SMECO customers were without power, most of those in Charles County.
Beth Campbell, a public information officer for Charles County Emergency Services, reports that the county has deployed their tactical response teams to survey the damage.
Charles County said there were unconfirmed reports of dozens of electrical wires knocked down, several transformer fires, brush fires, trees down, reports of trees on houses and even a water rescue. The county had not compiled a list of road closures as of the early overnight hours.
There were no reports of major damage in Calvert County or St. Mary's County in the early overnight hours.
This is a developing story, TheBAYNET will have more information as it becomes available.
TheBAYNET's Andy Marquis and Marianne Bivens contributed to this report.
