At 6 p.m. Sept. 20, members of the St. Mary’s NAACP, citizens and local officials held a Candle Vigil in

According to the St. Mary’s Branch of NAACP:
Last fall, when two Black high school students sat under the "white" tree on their campus, white students responded by hanging nooses from the tree. When Black students protested the light punishment for the students who hung the nooses, District Attorney Reed Walters came to the school and told the students he could "take [their] lives away with a stroke of [his] pen." Racial tension continued to mount in Jena, and the District Attorney did nothing in response to several egregious cases of violence and threats against black students. But when a white student--who had been a vocal supporter of the students who hung the nooses--taunted a black student, allegedly called several black students "nigger", and was beaten up by black students, six black students were arrested on charges of second-degree attempted murder.
support of “the Jena 6”, at Freedom Park in Lexington Park.

More than 300 people attended the rally.

The mission of the vigil was to raise awareness and let young people know that racism still exists. Many people are outraged and at the same time saddened by the situation in Jena, Louisiana.

Rallies are being held around the country almost daily, as one of the accused teens remains jailed for 10 months, facing a new trial.

Several local officials attended the rally in Lexington Park, including St. Mary’s Sheriff Tim Cameron.

“I condemn injustice against anyone, and demand fairness of all my deputies,” Cameron told the crowd.

“Sure it could happen here,” Cameron said. “But we would call it what it is, quickly condemn it, and move on from there.”

After the event Cameron described it as unbelievable, and said there was a “great sppirit” with the crowd.
