Kimberly Madonna, 52 of Brandywine, MD., (formerly of Charlotte Hall, MD) passed away on May 20, 2013 at Hospice of the Chesapeake Mandarin House, Harwood, MD. Kim was born on January 7, 1961 to Van Buren Church and Arlene Yvonne Lawrence in Fort Belvoir, VA.

Kim worked in the food industry. She enjoyed listening to music and going fishing and she especially loved spending time with her grandchild, Alyssa. Kim had a big heart and always wanted to make people happy.

Kim was preceded in death by her father, Van Buren Church and her stepfather, Charles Lawrence.

She leaves to cherish her memories her two daughters, Lisa Deal and Lorna Madonna; grand-daughter, Alyssa; mother, Arlene Lawrence; brothers, Van and Jeffrey Church; sister, Lenda Jarboe and her constant companion, Will Watts.

One of the many memories of Sophia is how she loved country music.

Sophia was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Angie Sternack and great-grandson, Aaron Duke Labille, Jr.
She is survived by her son, Alexander Sternack, Jr. (Bonnie); daughter, Diane Chamblee (Don); grandchildren, Michael Gregory (Tera), Alex Sternack, III, Shelly Sternack Morris (Rob), Crystal Donn (Jason), Ashley Patterson (Colin) and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Knott Winters, and William Edward Winters, Sr. William is survived by his loving wife Claudia Marie Winters, whom he married on August 4, 1968 in Port Chester, NY, children; William Winters, III (Diana) of California, MD, John Winters, and Courtney Winters both of Leonardtown, MD, and Meredith Snyder (Greg) of Richmond, VA, siblings; Joyce Keller of St. John, FL, and James Winters of Leonardtown, MD, 5 grandchildren; London Synder, Liam Winters, Alessandra Winters, Gianna Winters, and Lanie Smith. Billy was a lifelong resident of St. Mary's County. He graduated from St. Michael's High school in 1965, and was the co-owner of Winters Sheet Metal in Leonardtown, MD for 47 years. Billy retired January 1, 2013. Born May 12, 1971 in Leonardtown, MD, he was the son of Frank Phillips and Claudia Sue Taylor Phillips of Leonardtown, MD.

Frank graduated from Leonardtown High School in May 1989. He was on the soccer and tennis teams. He also loved playing golf and spending time with his family and friends. He spent a few years in South Carolina pursuing a career in golf - gave that up and was pursuing a Computer Science degree at the University of South Carolina. Frank suffered a traumatic brain injury in 1998. Since that time he lived in Leonardtown under the care of his parents.

In addition to his parents, Frank is survived by his sister, Kathy Bell (Joe) of Leonardtown, MD; his niece, Alex Bell, and nephews, Brett Bell and Connor Bell.

The family will receive friends for Frank's Life Celebration on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Brinsfield Funeral Home, 22955 Hollywood Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Charles Memorial Gardens in Leonardtown, MD.

Randall Lee "Randy" Gillum, 58

Life Celebration ServiceLife CelebrationRandall Lee "Randy" Gillum, 58, of Waldorf, MD, formerly of District Heights, MD, was called home to his eternal rest with God on May 19, 2013, after his two year battle with stage 4 colon cancer.

Randy was born on September 2, 1954 in Philippi, WV, son of Athalie Ann (Louviere) Gillum.

Randy was a wonderful husband, son, father and brother who was always helpful and caring. At age 18, Randy was working at a local 7-Eleven, where he met Barbara, the love of his life. Later, Randy joined the United States Capitol Police Force in March of 1976. After completing his training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Georgia, where he was chosen to receive the Distinguished Graduate Award in the summer of 1976, he and Barbara were married on August 13, 1977. Randy worked for the U.S. Capitol Police for 33 years. Once Randy retired in September of 2009, he spent time with his family by taking memorable trips, riding ATV's with Barbara, and working on his many craftsman projects as a gifted woodworker.

Randy is predeceased by his son, Eric Shay Gillum. Eric was born in 1981 and passed away after only 8 weeks, due to a fatal heart condition. God blessed Randy & Barbara with 2 additional children in October of 1982 and July of 1985.

Randy is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Barbara Anne (Miller) Gillum; mother, Athalie Ann Gillum; children, Dana Nicole Gillum and Trevor Anthony Gillum; brother, Fred Gillum; and sisters, Debby Holder and Diane Simpson.

Family and friends will be received for Randy's Life Celebration on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. Born May 13, 1934 in Bushwood, MD, he is the son of the late Henry Mastin Owen and Mary Jane Pingleton Owen.

Ernest graduated from Great Mills High School on June 13, 1952. He proudly served in the United States Army from December 6, 1956 until his honorable discharge on December 5, 1958. He married his beloved wife, Eva "Susie" Owen and together they spent over 50 wonderful years together. He was self-employed as a commercial truck driver until his retirement in 2002. He was an avid gardener. However, his greatest love was his family; he enjoyed spending his time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Charles Owen (Debbie) of Hollywood, MD and Robby Owen (Tammy) of Mechanicsville, MD; his siblings, Elizabeth Cross of California, MD, Earl Owen (Freda) of Goldsborough, NC, Thomas Owen (Young Jo) of Gainesville, GA, Paul Owen of Houston, TX, and Norma Teachout (Pat) of Opal, FL; his grandchildren, Charlie Owen, Jr., Kelly Owen Sapp, Greg Owen, Kayleen Owen, and Dylan Owen; and his great-grandchildren, Charlie Owen III, Morgan Owen and Addison Owen. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughter, Tammy Lynn Owen and his brother, Richard Owen.

CAPT. Harry Melville Rogers USN (RET.), 91

Capt. Roger's Life Celebration with prayers at 7:00 PMCAPT. Harry Melville Rogers, "Mel," USN (RET.) 91 of Avenue, MD died at ten minutes after five, on the morning of May 18, 2013. A devoted husband, beloved father, dedicated Naval officer, farmer, volunteer in his church and respected member of his community, Mel left this world a better place.

Born on April 24, 1922 in Pittsburg, PA to Harry and Matilda Rogers, Mel spent most of his adolescent years growing up in Indianapolis, IN. As a young man in high school he was inventive and inquisitive, building gas powered go carts to drive around the streets of his neighborhood with his high school buddies. That academic inquisitiveness led him to Purdue University where after two years he transferred to the US Naval Academy, graduating with the Class of 1946. Always searching for knowledge, Mel continued his academic career at GW University earning a Master's Degree in Administration and Systems Management in 1970.

On Christmas Day in 1950, Mel married his lovely wife, Edith Celley, going on to have 62 years together. Edith and Mel raised four children: Mandy, who married Gordon, had two sons and lives in England; Barbara, who lives in Waldorf, Maryland; Harry, Jr. (Skip) who married Lucia who have a daughter and live in California; and Martha, who married Dave and raised four girls in Northern Virginia. Mel and Edith have seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Mel's Naval career spanned 30 years including serving aboard and commanding many Naval vessels all over the world. After retirement from the Navy in 1973, Mel and Edith moved to their Maryland farm, Maycroft, where Mel began a second career as a farmer, raising sheep and cattle with enthusiasm and willingness to take on new challenges, such as planting a tree farm. Mel became an important part of the fabric of St. Mary's County quickly, becoming a good neighbor and friend to many.

Mel enjoyed life to the fullest. He loved traveling, going to parties, caring for his family pets, and sitting on the porch with Edith enjoying the view. He will be greatly missed by all.

Charles R. Cox, Jr,, 88, of Prince Frederick, Maryland passed away on May 16, 2013 in Prince Frederick, Maryland.
Charles Cox was born at the first Calvert Hospital located on Church Street in Prince Frederick to Charles Richard Cox, Sr. and Daisy Simmons Cox. He lived his entire life on the family farm on Sixes Road, Prince Frederick, which his grandfather established in 1831. He was a full time farmer for all of his life adult life, retiring from farming just three years ago. His family raised tobacco, corn and small grains. In addition, Charles worked off the farm for over 30 years, retiring from a full time position at the MD State Highway facility in Prince Frederick. He had a genuine love of the agrarian life, which he passed on to his children, grandchildren and now great-grandchildren.

Charles graduated from Calvert County Public Schools and was deferred by the military during World War II in order to continue farming, specifically tobacco. In 1951, Charles married Anne Z. Cox of Prince Frederick, and they were married for 57 years until her death in October 2009. Charles and Anne were one of the founding families of The Calverton School, Huntingtown, MD., where Charles served on the Board of Directors. In addition, he and Anne were active members of Trinity United Methodist Church in Prince Frederick.

He leaves two sons, Richard Albert Cox and David Alan Cox, Sr. ( Susan Schmidt Cox), four grandchildren, Amy Whitney Rippey (Brian), David Alan Cox, Jr, (Cathy), Catherine Elizabeth Hamilton, (Robert), and Charles Raymond Cox. In addition, he leaves three great grandsons, Ethan Rippey, David Cox III, and Wyatt Rippey.

He was a humble Christian man and will be remembered for his strength of character, his work ethic, devotion to those he loved, and as a steward of the land and waters of Calvert County.

The family will receive friends on Sunday May 19, 2013 from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Trinity United Methodist Church, 90 Church Street, Prince Frederick, MD where services will be held on Monday , 10 AM Interment will follow in Central Cemetery, Barstow, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either Trinity UM Church or the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Arrangements by Rausch Funeral Home, Port Republic, MD.

Pearl Richardson-Day, 75 of Great Mills, MD., entered into eternal rest on Thursday, May 16, 2013. Pearl was born on November 28, 1937 to the late Norman and Annie Richardson in Arlington, VA. She received her education from Hoffman Boston High School in Arlington, VA. She attended Mt Olive Baptist Church in Arlington, VA., where she was baptized as a child. Pearl moved away with her three sons to Washington, D.C. She was employed with the Metropolitan Police Department for 17 years. During her employment with the Police Department, Pearl received numerous certificates and awards. After leaving the force, she moved to Lexington Park, MD and changed careers. She was employed for 11 years at the Naval Air Base MWR, Patuxent River, MD., at the Child Development Center, until her retirement. Pearl married the love of her life, Samuel (Bud) Day, on May 18, 1974. From that union they adopted their beloved daughter, JoAnne. Pearl enjoyed being in the Eastern Star Organization of St. Mary's. She also enjoyed going to the casino with family and friends and collecting all sorts of jewelry. Two things you knew about Pearl is that she never, never left home without one, her jewelry and two, her Bud. She was a very caring and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She was a true Pearl. She also enjoyed spending time with her in-laws Link, Helen, Mae, Mike and Anna. They had some good times together. In addition to her parents, Pearl was preceded in death by her son, Michael Madison; sister, Anna Hunter; brothers, Marion Harper, Norman, Jr., Clarence and Charles Richardson and her in-laws, Samuel and Florence Day. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Samuel (Bud) Day; sons, Guy (Dianna) of Las Vegas, William (Vickie) of Lexington Park, MD and Maverick (Viola) of Lexington Park, MD.; daughter, JoAnne Lingley of Florida; sisters, Peggy Hall of Hartford, Connecticut, Alice Correll of Lexington Park, MD, Sherry Williams of Temple Hills, MD and Cloret Ferguson of Quincy, MA; brothers, John and Harold Richardson of Hartford, .Connecticut, 21 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brothers-in-law, .Bernard and Charles Day of Richmond, VA, Leon of Lexington Park, MD.; sisters-in-law, Mary Morgan of Lexington Park, MD and Margaret Pittman of Richmond, VA and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Born July 27, 1960 at Misawa Air Force Base in Japan, she is the daughter of Richard Smart and Ruth Moyer Smart of Miami, FL.

Laura proudly served in the United States Navy as Cryptological Technician until her honorable discharge in October 1982. She married her beloved husband, Michael Campbell, on August 24, 1988 in Leonardtown, MD. Laura was employed as a store clerk at W.J. Dent and Sons in Tall Timbers, MD. Her children were the center of her life. She supported them in everything they did; including all the sporting events, especially wrestling. Her greatest attributes were her selflessness and love for others. She enjoyed doing puzzles, scrapbooking, couponing, and traveling. She also greatly enjoyed taking walks along beaches; among her favorites was Deerfield Beach, FL.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Apollo Thomas of Oceanside, CA, Adam Campbell of Frederick, MD and Austin Campbell of Tall Timbers, MD; along with her brother, John Smart (Pam) of Dover, DE; and many extended family and friends.

Linda "Diane" Breed Marstaller, 61 of Lusby, MD formerly of Hillcrest Heights, MD passed away peacefully at her residence on May 15, 2013. She was born on April 6, 1952 in Cheverly, MD to the late Jeanne Breed Poe and the late George Breed.

Diane graduated form Potomac High School in 1970 and moved to Calvert Co. in 1975 from Prince George's Co. She enjoyed playing pool, bowling, and spending time playing with her grandchildren.

Diane is survived by her long time significant other, Calvin Boyd of Lusby, MD; children, Nisa Woodring (Dennis, Sr.) of Fox River Grove, IL, Brandi Harris of Lusby, MD, Mark Boyd of Hollywood, MD, and Mike Boyd of Upper Marlboro, MD; siblings, Marian Clark of Pasadena, MD and George Breed, Sr. of Hilton Head Island, SC; eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Francis Jerome "Matt" Mattingly, 93

Mass of Christian BurialLife Celebration with prayers recited at 4:00 p.m.Francis J. "Matt" Mattingly, 93, of Leonardtown, MD died on May 15, 2013 at his home.

Matt was born on July 2, 1919 in Compton, MD. He is the son of the late Zachariah Milton Mattingly, Jr. and Catherine Palace Pope Mattingly.

Matt attended Margaret Brent School before working various jobs as a mechanic. During World War II, he worked at the Martin Aircraft Factory until he was able to enlist in the U.S. Marine Corp. After the war, he and his brother, Leo ran a gas station in D.C., and later he owned and operated a gas station in Leonardtown, MD with his brother, John. In 1968, the gas station was sold and he worked at the St. Mary's County Board of Education's Maintenance Department until he retired in 1985.

In 1940, he married Nettie M. Hazel Mattingly and the following year they were blessed with the birth of their son, Jeffrey. The pride of his life was his family, especially his grandsons and great grandchildren. Matt was an amazing and talented mechanic who enjoyed using his skills with race cars and boats along with working on cars of friends. He was an avid follower of NASCAR.

Matt is survived by his son, Jeffrey L. Mattingly and his wife, Debra M. Mattingly, of Leonardtown, MD; grandsons, Sean M. Mattingly, of Odessa, DE, Christopher M. Mattingly, of Grantsville, MD; five great grandchildren; and his sister, Evelyn Mattingly Ridgeway, of Deland, FL. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Nettie M. Hazel Mattingly on November 22, 2002. Matt was also preceded in death by his siblings, Williams Jennings "Bones" Mattingly, Joseph Woodley "Tom" Mattingly, Alberta Mary "Bert" Mattingly, Leo Martin Mattingly, Charles Elmer "Bee" Mattingly, James Zachariah "Pappy" Mattingly, George Aloysius "Albees", Jr., Bernard Ignatius "Nace" Mattingly, and John Gibbons Mattingly.

Theodora was a Bookkeeper with the Utilities Workers Union of America prior to her retirement. She enjoyed cooking, watching comedy shows, shopping for bargains, being with her family.

Theodora was predeceased by her parents, sisters, Mary Boswell, Eleanore Puddy, Frances Kidwell, and brother, Louis Tavarozzo.

Theodora is survived by her husband, James Bernard "Bernie" Morris, Sr.; daughters, Sherri Marie Richardson, Brenda Leigh Busch and Angela Dee Morris Forsythe; sisters, Dolores Rivera, Joan Scanlon and Janet Fagan; grandchildren, Andrew James Anderson, Jennifer Marie Busch, Thomas Paul Busch and Benjamin Alexander Forsythe.

Family will receive friends on Monday, May 20 2013 from 5:00 PM to 7 PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. There will be a Memorial Service at 7:00 PM at Brinsfield-Echols with Rev. Rory T. Conley officiating. Inurnment will be private.

Funeral Service Life Celebration Joseph Owen "Joey" Remsburg, 23, of Mechanicsville, MD, passed away on May 14, 2013 at home in Mechanicsville, MD.

He was born on May 29, 1989 in Leonardtown, MD, son of Donna May Remsburg.

Joey was a Dallas Cowboy's football fan. He loved his dog, Debo. He enjoyed the water, four wheeling, shooting his gun, and hanging out with his friends and family.

He is predeceased by his cousin, Christina Quesenberry.

Joey is survived by his mother, Donna; sister, Jocelyn Greenwell; grandparents, Edward & Linda Remsburg; aunts and uncles, Margaret & Donald Saylor, Tammy & Robert Quesenberry; cousins, Kristi Saylor, Crystal Quesenberry, and Michael Quesenberry.

Family and friends will be received for Joey's Life Celebration on Sunday, May 19, 2013 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Road, Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. There will be a Funeral Service on Monday, May 20, 2013 at 11:00, here at the funeral home. Interment will follow to Charles Memorial Gardens, 26325 Point Lookout Road, Leonardtown, MD 20650.

Pallbearers will be Steven Schmidt, Zack Williams, Paul Baker, Ronnie Tippett, Blake Dotson, Greg Bice, Dustin Willett, and Tony Brash.

Daniel loved computers and worked as a Computer Technician at PAX River. He was a passionate Civil War buff and took part in many re-enactments. He mostly enjoyed being with his many friends and family.
Daniel was predeceased by his grandparents, Robert and Nellie McCartney, and Melvin and Mary Cusick. He is survived by his parents; children, Ashley Nicole Alexander (Brandon), William "Ray" Cusick and Ashley Leeanna Connor; sister, Vicki Lynn Hendrix; grandchildren, Owen Orion Alexander and Evan Joseph Flowers; niece, Amanda Branan and nephew, Matthew Nairn.

Jacquline J. Justice, 80, of Lusby, Maryland passed away peacefully May 13, 2013 at her home. Jackie was born on November 25, 1932 in Bethesda, Maryland to the late Marling J. and Eleanor Kulp Ankeny. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her husband, Donald B. Justice, son David B. Justice and a sister Eleanor Ann Murray.
Jackie worked for the Calvert County Office on Aging which she retired from in 1998 after 24 years of service. She was also involved and many different community organizations including but not limited to Friends of Calvert County, Christmas in April, the Kiwanis Club, which she served on the board, Meals on Wheels, which she helped to get started and was on the board and a Nutrition Program for Seniors that she started in 1975.
Beloved mother of, Susan Dugan and her husband James, grandmother of Jon Dugan and Stephanie Dugan all of Garland, Texas.
The family will receive friends on Thursday May 16, 2013 at the Rausch Funeral Home, 4405 Broomes Island Road, Port Republic, Maryland from 2-4 and 6-8 PM where services will be held on Friday May 17, 2013, 11 AM. Interment will follow in Middleham Chapel Cemetery, Lusby, MD. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kiwanis Club.

Mass of Christian BurialLife Celebration Elizabeth Flavia Chappelear Hoffman, 90, formerly of Waldorf, MD passed May 13, 2013 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home. Born May 21, 1922 in Washington, D.C. she was one of triplet daughters born to Thomas Irving Chappelear, Sr. and Mae Bessie Stinnett Chappelear. Raised in Benedict, MD, Flavia attended Hughesville High School. She and her sisters, Ellen Rose and Mary Virginia went into the nursing profession and graduated from Providence Hospital School of Nursing. They all entered the U.S. Army Air Corps as nurses. Flavia served from 1943 - 1946. In 1952 she married George Joseph Hoffman and began to raise a family. She continued to work as a nurse at Physicians Memorial Hospital in La Plata, MD, and the Health Departments in Cheverly and Clinton, MD retiring in 1981. Flavia loved her church, St. Francis deSales in Benedict, travelling, sports, crabbing and the water.

Flavia was predeceased by her parents, husband, grandson, Scott Justin Hutchinson, sister, Ellen Rose Houser, brothers, Thomas Irving Chappelear, Jr. and Francis DeSales Chappelear. She is survived by her children, Thomas Lawrence Hoffman, Sr. (Debra) of Hughesville, MD and Mary Ellen Hutchinson (Scott) of Benedict, MD; grandchildren, Thomas Lawrence Hoffman, Jr., Alison Noelle Hoffman and Cristina Marie Hutchinson; great grandchildren, Jacob Scott Hoffman and Adison Lynn Harris; sister, Mary Virginia Chappelear; loving caregiver, Sherille Johnson and many other relatives and friends.

The family will receive friends for Flavia's Life Celebration on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 from 2:00 - 4:00p.m. and 6:00 - 8:00p.m. with prayers at 7:00p.m.at Brinsfield-Echols Funeral Home, P.A., 30195 Three Notch Rd., Charlotte Hall, MD 20622. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at 10:00a.m. at St. Francis deSales Church, 7185 Benedict Ave., Benedict, MD 20612. Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Suitland, MD.
