Commission Asks NRC to Delay Reactor Decisions

A five-member panel appointed by President Obama to oversee the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has recommended the agency not make any final decisions on 22 nuclear reactor projects, including Calvert Cliffs 3, a spokesman for the NRC reported.

Residential Sprinkler Exemption Continued for Some Homes

Some new single-family homes in St. Mary's County will continue to be exempt from a requirement to have sprinkler systems. The county commissioners at their Aug. 7 meeting approved the extension of the existing exemption to the county's building code for new homes not served by central water.

SMECO Restores Service to Calvert and St. Mary's

SMECO restored electric service to all of its customers in Calvert and St. Mary's counties who were affected by Friday night's power outages as of Tuesday, July 2. Some additional outages in those counties have occurred today following the storm restoration.

Charlotte Hall Sewer Expansion Pulled from MetCom Plan

The St. Mary's County Commissioners have pulled a $5 million sewer expansion project in the New Market-Charlotte Hall area from the Metropolitan Commission's six-year capital improvement plan. The move was done at the behest of Commissioner Lawrence Jarboe (R: 3rd).

Update on New Septic Bill Grandfathjering

The recently concluded session of the Maryland General Assembly adopted legislation intended to limit the creation of new building lots to be served by on-site septic systems. House Bill 236, commonly referred to as the "Septic Bill," allows property owners to be "grandfathered."
