Governor O’Malley proclaims October 5 – 11, as Fire Prevention Week and urges all people of this State to join in and support this observance. The Office of the State Fire Marshal is taking an active role in the National Fire Prevention Association’s Fire Prevention Week by supporting local activities and events that will both entertain and educate the public. The Office of the State Fire Marshal hopes to raise awareness of key fire safety issues, helping Marylanders prevent fires and fire injuries, especially in the home. “While home fires are troubling, the good news is that many are easily preventable when residents take simple steps to increase their safety from fire,” says State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard. “Many people do not realize that they are at greater danger from fire at home than anywhere else. The National Fire Protection Association selected the 2008 Fire Prevention Week theme in order to highlight a serious concern for safety. The theme, “It’s Fire Prevention Week: Prevent Home Fires” is a safety message urging planning and preparation for fire emergencies. Here are a few fire safety tips: 1. Keep all things that can burn such as paper, bedding or furniture at least three feet away from heating equipment. 2. Stay in the kitchen if you are cooking. Do not leave items on the stove unattended. 3. Teach kids that matches, lighters, and candles are not toys. Matches and lighters should be stored in a secure drawer or cabinet 4. Install and maintain a working smoke alarm outside each sleep area and remember to change the battery at least once a year. 5. Designate two escape routes from each bedroom/room and practice regularly. “Taking the time to look for potential fire hazards can avert the costly and sometimes deadly effects of fire,” says the State Fire Marshal.
