Around 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 21, emergency crews got a call for a hazardous materials spill at 21768 South Coral Drive in Lexington Park, an address Bay District firefighters used to call home.

Crews arrived at the old firehouse, which now accommodates the Habitat for Humanity store and discovered a leak in the hot water heater, which spilled three to five gallons of diesel fuel onto the ground of the building floor into the sewer system. METCOM, the county's water and sewer service was notified along with other environmental agencies.

Questions and concerns were raised as to whether the hazardous leaking material would filter into the sewer system and affect the waste water treatment plant, but METCOM was able to contain the leak without incident.

Crews were back in service shortly after 10 a.m.
