Deli Worker Flown Out to Reattach Finger

A woman working the deli counter at Food Lion in Lexington Park on Sunday had a serious mishap with the meat slicer. At around 2:15 p.m., the woman sliced off a good deal of her finger and had to be transported to PG Hospital in order to attempt to save the finger.

Units from Bay District placed the severed finger in ice to try to preserve the tissue. Trooper 7 was called and transported the women. More details to  follow as they become available.

For real?!?!?
None of the doctors at St. Mary's Hospital are qualified to attach a finger? Who makes these calls to send people out by helicopter? It just seems like we are flying out quite a few people lately.

The the doctors at St. Mary's do not have the skills to perform the type of micro-surgery necessary to reconnect ANY limb so that feeling and function are restored.

And we don't have a sufficient need in St. Mary's to keep someone with that capability, thankfully. They are needed more in the city, and get paid more in the city too.

Its obvious that you don't know anything so let me teach you something!! St. Mary's hospital is not a certified Hand Center so no they cannot do anything for this person. Under Maryland Protocal this situation warrents a Flyout to the local Hand Center up the road where they are specialized in this type of work. Maybe instead of complaining you should try being part of these organizations and learn a few things before running your mouth.

The ambulance crew does a consult with the doctors at the trauma center and they determine if the patient should be flown or not. The ambulance crew is doing what the protocols tell them to do.

It says she was flown to PG hospital. When you cut off a finger you need to get to the hospital as soon as possible for the best chance to successfully reattach a finger...hence the chopper.

You been living under a rock for the past year? They aren't flying people out half as bad as they were BEFORE Trooper 2 crashed. Now the ambo crews have to do a consult with a trauma center before they make the decision to fly.

Grow up. What exactly was I running my mouth on? I simply asked a question on "were there not any doctors at St. Mary's". I am in awe that for as big as this area is now, that we don't have someone qualified in this area. And I asked a question on who makes the calls for the helicopter. No complaints. And again, simply states that it "seems" like more people are flown out now. For you to jump like you did, you must be a volunteer and heard people saying the same thing about the fly-outs.

Don't know what has pipeman33's panties all twisted in a bunch. I thought your questions were reasonable and you were just looking for information. I agree about the fly out but why take them to PG, shouldn't they go to Union Memorial?

They have a major hand center at Union Memorial. I looked at the UM web page and noticed a few interesting items. 1 - the Helipad just opened on October 13th, so it may not be well known yet. 2 - the web page says "Air transportation is provided by MedSTAR Transport". Trooper 7 may not be allowed to land on the pad unless they have a critical cardiac patient.

I'm just putting a few facts together to come up with that. Does anybody know more about the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore?

Closest trauma center? I'm not sure, I'm not on the EMT side. If I had to guess, I would say it's because it's the closest trauma center, and she needed quick reattatchment.

ok its not just everybody or who you know ect...that gets you flown out its what hospital wants the patient ok they have to be catogorized then a med consol has to be done with all of the opptions a patient can go then from there which ever has enough room and the qualifications gets the patient and st.marys is not qualified to handle amputations

Hey my Grandma cut of 4 of her 5 fingers side ways at the age of 88.

I'm curious
How do they pack a finger on ice? Do they run to 7-11 and get a Big Bite box like they did for John Bobbitt? A picture of the ice-packed finger would have been most informative.

Think before you speak
I am not sure what to think about what is being talked about. The #1 concern is patient care. When there is a trauma what ever it maybe, the patient has the critical hour. Whether hand, foot, or even finger there is that hour. Being an EMT myself, we have protocal based on the trauma. We have to talk with the hospital that we would transport to and a trauma center or two. At that time it is determined were the patient should go. So I think that the facts should be looked at before people just to conclusions. Thanks
