Southern Maryland Electric Cooperative and the school systems of Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties are accepting nominations for the Outstanding Mathematics and Science Teacher of the Year Awards for 2009. Each year, the Cooperative and the school systems recognize classroom teachers for excellence in teaching mathematics and science. Parents, students, community members, and colleagues of teachers are invited to submit nominations for these awards, and teachers may also nominate themselves. Criteria for nominees include the following: 1. Nominees must have a current standard Maryland teaching certificate and teach mathematics or science at a school served by SMECO.2. Teachers must have tenure within their county. 3. Teachers or nominators must submit supporting documentation that demonstrates the candidate’s effectiveness as a teacher. This must include an essay on “How My Classroom Instruction Reflects Maryland's Core Learning Goals.” Also encouraged are parent letters of recommendation or commendation, lesson plans, photographs, or displays. 4. Nominees must have a completed application package that includes the nominee information sheet, a copy of the teaching certificate, letter of recommendation from the school principal, and the supporting documentation.
