No One Cares Who Wins; The Super Bowl is Just Plain Fun!

It doesn’t matter if you are from Pittsburgh or from Arizona, from Peoria or French Lick, or Seattle or Miami, or Leonardtown or Prince Frederick or La Plata; the Super Bowl is something special and a great excuse to throw a party.

And party we do. It is not only the true football fanatics that will break out the party snacks and huddle around the big screen on Sunday, Feb. 1 for the biggest game of the year. People who don’t like football also find an excuse to throw a party and to cheer – after all it’s the Super Bowl!

For those who do follow football and enjoy the game, regardless of teams, just for the love of the game, the Super Bowl looming portends some interesting nuance.

On one side there is the mighty Pittsburgh Steelers that used to rule the NFL with their “iron curtain” defense, Stallworth and Swan and Bradshaw and the “immaculate reception” and years of history. On the other, is an upstart Arizona Cardinals team that has a bunch of rookies and an old, veteran, blitz-savvy quarterback.

As in the past few years in the NFL, the hottest teams in the playoffs and the ultimate winners of the Super Bowl championship have been the underdogs. In this game both teams are the ultimate underdogs.

One, the Steelers, has a monster defense and a wild man stalking the defensive backfield talking receivers and scaring opponents to death.

The other, the Cardinals, has some amazing athletes including a receiver that can catch a pass while tied into a knot, leaning backwards with one finger, stretching his toes across the goal line while flying an inch off the ground.

One, the Steelers, has a quarterback that has won a Super Bowl, but is also the most sacked quarterback in the league.

The other, the Cardinals, has a seasoned veteran quarterback that can read defensive blitzes better than any other quarterback in the league and smiles at defensive linemen trying to take him out of the brutal game. He also has a Super Bowl win and a couple of MVP awards to his name.

On Sunday, the game will come down to what football games always do- which ever one makes the fewest mistakes and keeps a hold of the football the most usually wins. Unless, of course, it plays out like the year when Bret Favre led the Green Bay Packers to a win of The New England Patriots, when a pip-squeak return man and rookie fresh from Michigan ruled the game with multiple touchdown returns, which broke the back of the Patriots and got Favre his lone Super Bowl ring.

Maybe the game on Sunday will be something similar. But, that’s why they play the game. One never knows what is going to happen – except for the four hours of blithering drivel leading up to kick off. That never changes.
