'The Best Social Program is a Job'

In the spirit of this country’s forefathers, a grassroots "tea party" protest movement comprised of Republicans, Democrats and independents concerned about the direction in which our nation is headed has broken out across America. On Suday, March 22 the movement landed squarely in U.S. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer's own backyard.

On Sunday, there was a huge ralley that filled Solomons pavillion, spilling out across the island. Hundreds of people came to hear inspirational speakers and to protest the path on witch the nation is embarked.
 
According to one event speaker, Charles Lollar in an interview with TheBAYNET.com, "Ths rally was a tremendous

success because people are tired of the entitlement mentality that exists. [Lawmakers] in Congress and Annapolis need to know they have no right to hold citizens hostage to support their own agendas." It was Lollar that gave rise to the crowd with his stirring speech at one point stating, "The best social program is a job!"
 
There was a great deal of interest in the event and the effort was bolstered by the hundreds of attendees that shared their displeasure with President Barak Obama, Maryland's Governor Martin O'Malley and Congressman Steny Hoyer.
 
TBN was there to record the effort and the protest which culminated with the launching of a "tea party-style" symbolic throwing of boxes of tea into the harbor to the cheers of all in attendance.
 
The local Calvert County Republican Party endorsed the movement and the "Concerned Citizens Tea Party" event was open to all. The event's speakers included:

NOW?!? Now is when the Republican Party has decided that spending has gotten out of control?? In a matter of 8 years our National Debt has almost DOUBLED and NOW is when the Republicans have decided to work up some outrage....Get a life you hypocrites.....

Why is it that democrats always resort to name calling when they have nothing of substance to say?

As far as your facts go, national debt during Bush was high because we are at war. He did grow government at a pace that even most Republicans disagreed with, though.

Obama, on the other hand, has submitted a record-high budget, growing government at a rate never seen before. His plan to finance his "socialization of American society" is to tax the pants off anything that will stand still long enough. THAT is what we object to. Bigger government is not better government.

Finally, even if you don't agree with our cause, we still have a right to express our views. We love our country and don't want to see it become a socialist society. You also have a right to express your views -- we would just like to see some intelligent debate without name-calling. It demeans your position.

One gets tired of these "obamanites" that always try to demonize the republicans/conservatives with no argument other than false stereotypes (that are only effective with ignorants)…our Country has forgot its founding ideals and principles…and yes we are headed towards a government that is based on socialist principles. It is the beginning of the end of our way of life. SAD

Many of the same people that complain about Steny Hoyer work for contractors who serve Pax River. Let us not forget that had it not been for Mr. Hoyer, you folks may have been dissolved or moved on by now. That is gratitude for you. Some republican business owners need to remember esp. in these bad economic times. These people still have their jobs here and spend their money at your business keeping your head above water.

If you know something to be wrong, does the fact you've done it before automatically invalidate your right or obligation to speak out against it? Of course not. If that were the case, no one could offer corrective counsel to their friends, nor could parents warn their children about the dangers of certain types of activity because we've all sinned.

If you did something wrong as a child, would your parents give you a pass if you said, "Well, so-and-so did it, too!" That's what it sounds like when Obama supporters complain about our criticism of his record spending spree ($1.179 trillion in 61 days or $19,622,950 a day); "Well, Bush did it, too!"

Well, we were speaking out against his $700 billion bailout last fall, too. We spoke with our votes in 2006 and 2008 when millions of us stayed home because the GOP didn't live up to its promises of fiscal responsibility and limited government.

Criticize the hypocrisy of GOP elected officials if that makes you feel better, but your neighbors, the grass-roots conservatives, have always been against excessive government spending, and when that spending is primarily devoted to growing government, paying back liberal allies, and creating a permanent dependent class that will be reliant on government for years to come, we will not be quiet. It would be an abdication of our responsibilities as citizens is we remained silent.

If this is true, that you didn't agree with the faux Republican administration's spending, then why the silence while they were destroying the economy? Why didn't you protest then? Is it possible that the lack of protests from fiscal conservatives like yourself was seen by the GOP as an acceptance of their policies?

And so that I don't make an assumption here.....are you also stating that you didn't vote in the 2008 election because you didn't support the GOP candidate? If you didn't vote, then do you have the right to complain about the results knowing full well that Obama was going to spend to this level? He was pretty clear in the debates that he was going to reinvest in America and being a Democrate, we knew how he was going to spend it. The writing was on the wall.

And, I agree that the folks in Washington calling themselves GOPs appear to be hypocrital and have been for the last 8 years. They do not represent the true values of the Republican party. I guess the hypocrisy seen by LazyBee is the fact that you didn't protest the Bush administration's out of control spending, you waited until the Obama administration started spending to raise the alarm. The horse was already out of the barn.

It is your constitutional right to protest....but let's be consistant. Out of control spending is out of control spending, regardless of which party is writing the checks.

1) I voted in 2008 - apologies if I implied that I didn't. By some estimates, however, 4 million conservatives stayed home out of disgust with both candidates.

2) Does that give them the right to complain? I always found it interesting that people seem to think there's a correlation between the right to vote and freedom of expression. Somehow, if you didn't exercise the former, you're somehow prohibited from the latter. Freedom of expression is a birthright, not a privilege earned through voter participation. Whether people voted or not, spoke out previously or not, or failed to meet any other standard people want to throw out there is immaterial. Today's American lacks a basic understanding of the characteristics of liberty, to include that it's not meant to be clean, orderly and sensible in practice. Thomas Jefferson said "The boisterous sea of liberty is never without a wave." It is neither realistic nor appropriate to impose rules on how liberties are to be exercised except when they infringe on the liberties of another.

3) Everyone who claims conservatives were silent when George Bush grew government and spent too much is guilty of selective memory or not paying attention. Whether it was No Child Left Behind, the Medicare prescription benefit, or the $700 billion bailout, we made our feelings known. The difference? Conservatives don't take to the streets; frankly, that's not a skill we've perfected. An elderly woman at the Tea Party said, "I've never been to a protest before." We were shouting in the woods where no one could hear us until Rick Santelli of CNBC declared that Americans ought to have another Boston Tea Party in protest over the massive spending of this administration in just over two months time. This is a grass-roots movement that started with a rant on the floor of the Chicago Board of Trade and has now spread across the country. Now that we know how to express ourselves in a way that gains attention, we'll be out there to hold Democrats and Republicans accountable for how they spend our money. I don't understand why people want to criticize us for what we're doing; it's their money, too. There is no such thing as government money. We've got to stop thinking that government is our master rather than our servant. We don't work for them; they work for us.

Well said. And I couldn't agree with you more about how our country has forgotten its founding ideals and principles. But I also have to say that I believe the SLEEPING centrist and conservatives are beginning to wake up and I sense a deep growl about this country that is going to make this a ONE TERM President. And maybe JUST maybe, like after Jimmy Carter, we will get another true leader like RONALD REAGAN was!!!

...if you think the only reason Pax River is viable is because of Steny Hoyer. There are a lot of people who understand the BRAC process and are irritated that he's been posturing himself as the savior of Pax River when the process doesn't allow for the kind of influence he claims to exert. It's like taking credit for a rescue after the hard work has already been done.

My friends on the BRAC commission will tell you that Pax River is viable because it is militarily significant and retainable on its own merits. Steny is taking credit for something that's already in the bag.

I have in my possession a study, "The Impact of Political Factors on Military Base Closures," by economics professors from Mercer University and Benoit College that concludes "Our main finding is that politics does not seem to have any significant effect on base closings." When will the people of St. Mary's County realize that Steny not only doesn't vote their values but he's taking them for a ride?

I am 51 and have never been active in politics before, but this man in the White House scares me so much that I am out of my shell and going to tea parties and also joining local groups of the Republican Party. You should do the same. You will become informed and find an avenue for your voice.
