Bay District Firefighters Doing Some Urban Renewal on Maryland Route 237
LEONARDTOWN - 4/14/2009

On Saturday, April 11, Units from Bay District and other companies including Engine 91, Engine 92, Tower 9, Brush 9 & 9A Engine 34, Engine 32, Engine 33, Truck 3, Brush 3 Mutual Aid: Engine from Ridge (Company 4) Engine from Second District (Company 6) Ambulance from Lexington Park Rescue Squad participated in a controlled burn at the intersection of State Road 237 and Norris Road. The state was planning some road expansion and they needed to remove a house from the area. Firefighters are always looking for training, and this provided the perfect opportunity.
Under the direction of Deputy Chief 9 Downs and Deputy Chief 3 Evans, the firefighting crews prepared ten areas of the one story ranch for the controlled burns. The rainy day did not deter the crews from receiving much needed training.
Firefighters were placed into crews of four consisting of three firefighters with one senior firefighter as the crew chief. The addition of firefighters from other companies not only provided a perfect number of crews, but allowed firefighters to work with those who they ordinarily would not be with. Forty firefighters took place in the training which gave each team one of the ten burn areas of the structure.
Crews, during the burn, were able to fight their respective burn areas at least twice and sometimes three times which provided invaluable real firefighting experience. One firefighter received some minor burns to his knees and hands during the training, but the exercise was deemed a success by the time the Chiefs decided to let the structure burn and the crews wrapped up for the day.
