The Department of Aging would like to share information and upcoming events for local senior centers: Law Enforcement Appreciation Day The staff at Loffler Senior Activity Center invites mothers age 50+ to the annual Mother’s Day Tea on Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. Enjoy a variety of teas and pastries plus gentle entertainment while being honored for your years of dedication to the noble calling of parenthood. Make a reservation by calling(301) 737-5670 ext. 1658 Loffler Senior Activity Center presents this month’s Health Watch topic: Enjoy Your Picnic and the Day After, Too on Thursday, May 14 at 11 a.m. Finally! The long-awaited picnic and cook-out season is here! But warm temperatures can pose safety threats to your delicious menu. Learn a few easy tips for keeping your food safe and your stomach happy. Call (301) 737-5670 ext. 1658 or stop by the receptionist’s desk to sign up. Spring Event: Potting Shed at Loffler Senior Activity Center on Friday, May 22, 10:30 a.m. Bring two six-packs or more of annuals to share; a favorite flower pot/basket and maybe some simple garden tools so you can prepare a flower basket for yourself. .We’ll supply the soil. Volunteer Opportunities: We are always looking for people to teach skills, arts, crafts and ideas at Loffler Senior Activity Center. This is a great way to meet active, fun-loving people while providing a valuable service to the community. Please call Shellie at (301) 737-5670, ext. 1655 Northern Senior Activity Center Cinco de Mayo at Northern…On Tuesday, May 5 at 11 a.m., a taco salad with all its accompaniments will be served with festive music and fruity marguerites too. Sign up by noon 24 hours in advance. Cost is $5 for persons under 60 and by donation for seniors. Come dressed for the occasion in brightly colored clothes! The YES Biking program has been designed for Youthful and Energetic Seniors 50 years young and over who like bicycling or would like to do more of it. Come meet others cyclists at the Northern Senior Activity Center who enjoy using Three Notch Trail. The program is two-part and FREE. First, a lecture on Modern Adult Cycling on May 6 at 1:30 p.m. will cover safety issues, pedaling/spinning and using gear shifts. Secondly, a group ride of 12 miles at a pace of 8-10 mph will be held Friday, May 8 at 1:30 p.m. for those who completed the orientation course. Instructor, Dan Donahue is certified in pedestrian and cyclist training and has over 20 years experience. Call (301) 475-4002 ext. 1003 at the Northern Activity Senior Center to sign up by Tuesday, May 5. A Quillow is a blend of simple quilt and pillow. It’s a lap size or juvenile-size quilt that can fold itself into a pillow -- making for an attractive display for your home or a unique gift. The Northern Senior Activity Center’s quilting instructor, Gina Alexander, will hold this class in May. A supply list as well as class date and time will be provided to those interested.
