Multi-Agency River Search Comes to an End

An extensive river search has come to an end after a 22-year-old man, training with the Navy, was discovered along the shoreline of Cobb Island in Charles County on Tuesday, May 12 around 7:15 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard, Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Charles County Dive Teams, assisted the Charles County Sheriff's Office in searching for a man who jumped into the Potomac River off Cobb Island.

Diane Richardson, spokesperson for the Charles County Sheriff's Department, says the man, who was is in the area for training with the Navy, had been drinking with some friends at the Scuttlebutt Restaurant in the 12300 block of Neale Sound Drive earlier that night. For unknown reasons, the man came back to the Restaurant and attempted to break into a establishment around 1:47 a.m. The man was spotted by a bartender who gave chase. In order to make his escape, the suspect jumped into the Neale Sound area of the river.

The suspect drifted down river, eventually washing up on the shoreline. Officers spotted the man walking in the area of the Scuttlebutt Restaurant around 7:15 a.m., and took him into custody.

The suspect who has not yet been identified only suffered minor scratches and cuts. This incident remains under investigation, charges are pending.
