The Community Emergency Response Team Program trains citizens in emergency response skills such as light search and rescue, fire safety and basic first aid. Trained volunteer CERT team members are needed to assist emergency responders during major emergencies or disasters, such as a hurricane or tornado.

The CERT training program is free to all citizens of St. Mary’s County and all supplies and equipment are provided. The CERT Program includes 24 hours of training, including an emergency response exercise or drill.  The next scheduled training will be held on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Public Safety Building on the Governmental Center Campus. Lunch will be provided.

Trained volunteers will be asked to help their families and neighbors during times of disaster until emergency responders can arrive. Year round, volunteers can help the community by assisting with home emergency preparedness outreach, fire safety education and workplace safety.  CERT can help to decrease the long term effects from emergencies and disasters, such as survivor stress, severe medical conditions and property damage, through early response and by learning how to identify and reduce hazards in the home and workplace.

Individuals from all areas of the community are encouraged to participate and group trainings can be offered for housing communities, churches, businesses and organizations.  If you would like more information or would like to register for the July training, contact Jaclyn Shaw at (301) 475-4200, ext. 2125 or visit St. Mary’s County CERT website at
