State Fire Marshals Warn Against Illegal Firework Use

MARYLAND - 6/30/2009

With summer just around the corner, State Fire Marshal William E. Barnard is warning Marylanders of the dangers of illegal fireworks use.  “Warmer temperatures and backyard picnics are a fun-filled way for everyone to enjoy our Maryland Summers.  Unfortunately, illegal fireworks can bring a tragic end to an otherwise happy family event,” according to the Fire Marshal.  To help Marylanders enjoy a safer summer season, the State Fire Marshal offers several ways to enjoy fireworks while avoiding injury:

• Use only those fireworks legal in your local area.  Your local fire prevention bureau is ready to answer questions on what fireworks are or are not legal in your area.

• Keep fireworks away from small children.  Let children enjoy fireworks from a safe distance.

• Avoid using fireworks when drinking alcoholic beverages.  Alcohol impairs judgment and reaction times, making an injury more likely.

• Consider attending one of the numerous public fireworks displays scheduled throughout Maryland every year.

“Fireworks are part of a long tradition of summer and holiday celebrations. By visiting one of the many public fireworks displays we can all enjoy a safer holiday!” adds the State Fire Marshal.
