Breakfast in The Classroom Approved for Select SMCPS

ST. MARY'S COUNTY - 7/29/2009

All current SMCPS schools approved to participate in the Maryland Meals For Achievement (MMFA) Program, also known as “breakfast in the classroom,” have been approved for fiscal year 2010.

This includes Green Holly Elementary, Park Hall Elementary, George Washington Carver Elementary, Lexington Park Elementary, Fairlead Academy, and Spring Ridge Middle.

This program provides breakfast in the classroom to every student, every day, and free of charge. Researchers credit MMFA with improving students’ academic performance.

SO DOES THIS MEAN THAT ALL KIDS WILL EAT IN THEIR CLASSROOMS THIS SCHOOL YEAR?

Is there a reason this new meal program is targeted in only one specific area...namely Lexington Park?

If you think about this county..What elementary schools arent in lexington park/Great Mills area? Piney Point, Hollywood, Mechanicsville? Not as many that are down this area, Why wouldn't they direct it toward the area with the most schools?

The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) (Pub.L. 89-10, 79 Stat. 27, 20 U.S.C. ch.70) is a United States federal statute enacted April 11, 1965. The Act is an extensive statute which funds primary and secondary education, while explicitly forbidding the establishment of a national curriculum.[1] As mandated in the Act, the funds are authorized for professional development, instructional materials, resources to support educational programs, and parental involvement promotion. The Act was originally authorized through 1970, however the government has reauthorized the Act every five years since its enactment. The current reauthorization of ESEA is the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. Title I ("Title One") of the Act is a set of programs set up by the United States Department of Education to distribute funding to schools and school districts with a high percentage of students from low-income families. To qualify as a Title I school, a school typically has around 40% or more of its students that come from families that qualify under the United States Census's definitions as low-income. Schools receiving Title I funding are regulated by federal legislation, including the No Child Left Behind Act. Title I funds may be used for children from preschool through high school, but most of the students served (65 percent) are in grades 1 through 6; another 12 percent are in preschool and kindergarten programs. I.E., a government give away to buy votes.

Its not called "buying votes" these schools are part of the Title 1 program.

Childhood Obesity
Kids already eat in classrooms, or at least in one local elementary school. The problem is with what they eat and who provides the food. Far too often, high fat/calorie junk food such as cupcakes, cookies, candy, pizza, and McDonalds is served to the kids by teachers. If a child is obese, take a hard look at what they're eating, and who's providing it.
