By Dfc.Cindy Allen
On Sept. 19, Bear Den 5 of Cub Scout Pack 420 of Leonardtown, volunteered their Saturday to landscape the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office new District 4 Substation. The Bear Den is working to achieve their Bear Den patch, which they hope to accomplish in April.

The Den is comprised of nine young men from the Leonardtown area of St. Mary’s County, Maryland. The landscaping work is required for the ‘Take Care of Your Planet’ step, just one step of the 12 steps necessary for the Den to complete to earn their patch. Saturday’s project may also help the Bears achieve the ‘Cub Scout World Conservation Award’ and the ‘Cub Scout Leave No Trace Awareness Award;’ two special awards which many Scouts never achieve.

The Den has volunteered to adopt the two flowerbeds in front of the Sheriff’s Office substation. The boys have committed to maintaining the new appearance to assure the perennials are flourishing and plan to replant colorful annuals in the spring. Sheriff Timothy Cameron would like to thank and commend Bear Den 5 and their parents for their community service. “The flowerbeds enhance the beauty of this historic building,” said Cameron.
“We had a great time today and appreciate the opportunity to contribute to a great cause. We look forward to greeting many of the deputies at the open house on Wednesday,” said Michael Daugherty, Bear Den 5 Leader.
Bear Den 5 will attend the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office District 4 Substation Joint Open House on Sept. 23, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Those interested are encouraged to stop by and congratulate the Scouts on a job well done.
The Bear Den is looking for other similar volunteer projects to help the boys work towards their achievements. For further information, please contact Bear Den 5 Leader Michael Daugherty at daugherty4567@gmail.com.
