Meet the Candidate: Shawn Quinn for State Delegate, District 29C
SOUTHERN MARYLAND - 7/13/2010
Libertarian Shawn Quinn has decided that Maryland’s government is big enough and it is time for a change. On a recent visit with TheBAYNET.com and on Baynet Radio, Quinn discussed his candidacy and the Libertarian Party and its philosophies.
“I think it is time to get some new blood in office and remove [a lot of our] taxes from the books. In November the voters will have a choice: more Government and higher taxes, or they can vote for a chance to reduce taxes and stick a pin in Maryland’s over inflated government,” said Quinn.
The candidate feels that if government is allowed to keep growing they will continue to find new ways to tax the citizens. “It will not take long before we are bankrupt and begging the Federal Government to bail us out. A strong foundation requires a small Government,” said Quinn.
He and the Libertarian Party feel that Democrats and Republicans are trying to sell voters the same old bag of goods.” I know how people feel,” said Quinn. “No one cares and no one is listening, I hear what voters say I'm in the same boat as they are. I go to work every day just to get by. I wonder what’s going to happen if something comes up like car trouble, house problems or God forbid health issues.”
Quinn stated that Libertarians believe government's role should be limited to protecting the lives of Americans. The party feels that the country would prosper and thrive as never before if local, state and Federal governments would concentrate on protecting the Constitutional rights of citizens and to defending America from foreign attack.
“Instead of tending to the basics, government has grown into a bloated conglomerate of political services that gets larger every year; with no end in sight. For example, politicians spend millions of dollars to urge people not to smoke, while spending more millions to subsidize tobacco farmers. They send billions overseas for foreign aid while the federal deficit swells. They spend millions to subsidize public art while working families struggle to pay their taxes,” said Quinn.
Quinn stated that America’s welfare system is unfair to everyone: taxpayers who must pick up the bill for failed programs; society whose institutions of community, church and family are increasingly pushed aside; and “most of all to the poor themselves, who are trapped in a system that destroys opportunity for themselves and hope for their children.
“We should eliminate the entire social welfare system. This includes eliminating AFDC, food stamps, subsidized housing, and all the rest. Individuals who are unable to fully support themselves and their families through the job market must, once again, learn to rely on supportive family, church, community, or private charity to bridge the gap,” said Quinn.
The Calvert resident has many other issues he discusses on his website: www.citizens4quinn.org. He also encourages voters to email him – quinnelectionhq@yahoo.com – and he will answer any questions they may have about his campaign, background, the issues or If they just want to know more about the Libertarian Party in general.
“We update the website daily. Any time a Political Action Committee sends us questions, we answer them and place that on the web site right away. We believe that every citizen has the right to know who they are voting for where they stand on the issues,” said Quinn.
