Piney Point Lighthouse Museum Offers Holiday Exhibit

The Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum and Historic Park in Piney Point will present a holiday exhibit set up in the lighthouse keeper’s quarters located on the south campus of the facility. The exhibit will present a military theme and include war eras and military branches to include the War of 1812, Civil War, World War II, the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard, and the Flying Santa project of New England.
Museum staff and volunteers will offer tours of the exhibit, museum, lighthouse, and Potomac River Maritime Exhibit. The lighthouse tower will be available for a climb to the top.
The Lighthouse Lens Museum Store will be open with an array of unique gifts, lighthouse and nautical items, jewelry, clothing, home décor and children’s items. Museum gift memberships are the perfect gift for the “one who has everything” and provide a 10% discount on museum store items.
The museum and holiday exhibit will be open noon to 4 p.m. on December 12, 13, 17, 18.19, 20 and daily 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from December 23 through January 2, 2011. The museum is closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Admission is $3 per adult, $2 for senior citizens and military personnel, $1.50 for children 6 to 18, and free for kids 5 and under.
All are invited to the museum’s Christmas Open House on Sunday, December 12 from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. Santa will arrive by U.S. Coast Guard vessel at 1 pm! Bring your camera! There will also be a boy and girl’s bike giveaway thanks to the Tall Timbers Optimist Club. Don’t miss the Sons of Union Veterans (Sgt. James H. Harris Camp #38) who will provide Civil War interpretation in full uniform.
The Piney Point Lighthouse, Museum and Historic Park is managed by the museum division of St. Mary’s County Department of Recreation and Parks and the Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary’s County. The facility is located at 44720 Lighthouse Road in Piney Point, MD. The museum, maritime exhibit and grounds are handicap accessible.
