Team A.I.P. Celebrity Basketball Game For Autism Awareness
Lusby, MD - 4/11/2011
By Nate Atwell/Toni Byrd
On Saturday, southern Maryland was treated with an energy filled night courtesy of Team A.I.P. which held a celebrity basketball game at Patuxent High School to benefit Autism Awareness. The event featured a childrens' basketball skills clinic, two separate basketball games, live entertainment and contests for audience members to show off their "Dougie" skills, or try their luck at the "free-throw line".
Throughout the fun, those in attendance, were reminded of the serious nature behind the extravaganza. "One in every hundred people suffer from Autism" pointed out an autism expert, who would later compare that number to the past, alluding to a possible future, where many more suffer from the neural development disorder. A Patuxent High school student with Autism bravely spoke to the audience about her struggles with Autism and subsequent bullying. Her speech was met with applause and cheers. Her speech was followed by a check for $1,000 given from Patuxent High School to the local Calvert County chapter for Austism Awareness.
