Martirano Gets Visit from His Friends
Leonardtown MD - 6/12/2011
By Dick Myers
In this day and age when many people have Facebook Friends, St. Mary’s County School Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano had a couple of his “friends” visit him in person.
With high school graduations over, the school year winding down, a budget vote just an hour away at Wednesday’s school board meeting, the superintendent invited two students to the table with him as kind of a reality check about what the school system is all about – the kids.
James Quade is a legally blind first grader at Green Holly School. James said he had a good year at school and at one point told Dr. Martirano: “I love you.” That brought a tear to the eyes and temporary speechlessness to the usually unflappable superintendent .
The other student, George Washington Elementary School kindergartener Jaylen Johnson, read to the superintendent, with a little help from him.
Both student’s parents, principals and teachers also attended the meeting.
