Society Holds Race in Solomons
SOLOMONS, MD - 9/19/2011
By Marty Madden
The Humane Society of Calvert County (HSCC) held its annual Pet Day 5K Run/Walk Saturday, Sept. 17 in Solomons. Over 200 people, some with dogs on leashes, came out to help HSCC raise funds to continue its mission.
Peter Offenbacher, 17 of Lexington Park, was the race’s top finisher with a time of 17 minutes and 35 seconds. Offenbacher, who received a cash prize from HSCC for winning the race, bested fellow Lexington Parker Perry Rapp, 46, by seven seconds.
The top female finisher was Allison Palmer, 25 of California, who finished the race in 19 minutes flat. Palmer also received a cash prize.
Dana Dewey of Leonardtown was the top racer teaming with a dog. Dewey and “Sophie” ran the race in 22 minutes and 22 seconds.
Over 155 runners participated. Numbers on the walkers participating or the amount of money raised during Sept. 17 event were not available.
According to its web site, HSCC strives to “improve our community for animals and people by sheltering and protecting animals from harm, placing them into caring, responsible environments, increasing awareness through humane education and community outreach, endeavoring to reduce animal overpopulation and to eliminate cruelty, serving as an advocate for animals by promoting humane standards, and enhancing the relationship between animals and people.” Since 1975, HSCC has run a "no-kill" animal shelter.
Last year HSCC raised $23,000 dollars to help continue their mission of rescuing homeless animals that would otherwise have no chance.
Complete results of the HSCC Pet Day 5K are posted on the Chesapeake Bay Running Club’s web site at www.cbrcmd.org
