'Toys' Exhibit Now on Display at Arts Center
SOLOMONS, MD - 10/17/2011
By Marty Madden
You could say the artists and crafters—over 30 in all—have toys in the attic. A large collection of toy images in several different media will be on exhibit for the next several weeks at Annmarie Sculpture Garden and Arts Center in Solomons.
“Toys: Re-Invent, Re-Imagine, Re-Discover” is an exhibit featuring over 60 different items. On Friday, Oct. 14, the public got its first glimpse of the unusual works with names like “Easy Bake Nuclear Oven,” “Dead Toy,” “Planetoid,” “The Long Haul” and “Boys’ Toys.”
“This exhibit cradles an adult’s mastery of craftsmanship with a child’s sensibility of play,” stated Andrew Wodzianski, an art professor at the College of Southern Maryland, who is serving as juror for the exhibit. “They keep one foot in the studio and the other in the sandbox.”
The opening reception for the exhibit allowed patrons ponying up $5 to wander the two-story arts building, sip wine or soda, snack on hummus, listen to live music and ponder the collection of “toys.”
The exhibit remains open to the public until Jan. 8 in the arts building’s main gallery. Admission is $3 for adults 12-and-up and $2 for seniors and children ages 5 - 11.
Hours of the exhibit are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. daily.
