U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on International Development and Foreign Assistance, issued the following statement on the death of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi:

“Moammar Gadhafii’s death is positive news for the people of Libya, for America, and for the international community.  For decades, Gadhafi persecuted all opponents to his regime and controlled the Libyan people with brutality and violence.  His open defiance of the will of his own people and their desire for freedom, and his rebuff of the international community, made it predictable that he would not survive this latest chapter.

“The primary objective now is for the Libyan people to take responsibility for their own governance.  The United States is prepared to be a part of the international support needed to help the new Libyan government rebuild their country and to be a good neighbor. A new Libya needs to join the international community in a way that brings stability to the region, including removing from the region some of their most dangerous weapons.”
