Verizon Expanding FIOS Service in Charles County

Verizon FIOS is working to expand service in rural parts of La Plata.  FIOS service is currently available in much of Waldorf, in and around the Town of La Plata.  Verizon says there are no immediate plans to expand service to Calvert and St. Mary’s County.

Expanding broadband is a goal for the Charles County Commissioners.  Recently, Charles County Commissioner President Candice Quinn Kelly (D) has expressed frustration about Verizon and Comcast not having broadband services in rural areas such as Nanjemoy and Dentsville.

The current construction locations show construction is being done as far out as Poorhouse Road and Bennsville Road (MD-229).  Verizon was unable to comment on any future deployments.  However, a reader tells TheBAYNET that Verizon has confirmed their services will be available in Dentsville soon.

“If that is true, I am delighted,” Kelly said.  “Access to high speed internet is essential to moving the county forward.  It’s good for employees who can work from home and home run businesses. From today’s electronics environment, it’s impossible to not have that access.  For students, it’s also important.  Children at schools need to have access to internet for homework.”
