BuildUP Program Geared To Help 150 People Learn Skills for Transportation Jobs
1/22/2012
The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA)’s BuildUP job training program is attracting so much interest that the application deadline is extended to Friday, February 3, 2012. During the next year, BuildUP will train 150 participants for transportation careers in Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) systems, construction craft skills and/or commercial driving (obtaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)). Training programs are planned for spring, summer and fall sessions in various locations around the State and include paid stipends for participants.
BuildUP is a new $1 million training program that provides key tools needed to help disadvantaged Marylanders secure jobs in the transportation field. Employment support services include resume building, interview techniques and transportation assistance. A unique aspect of the training opportunity includes an emphasis on job placement assistance through networking, job fairs and on-the-job training.
The goal of the program is to provide skill training and hands-on experience relevant to increase the employment potential to underserved groups including women, minorities, veterans, individuals currently unemployed and socially and economically disadvantaged individuals within Maryland.
Applications are available for download on SHA’s web site and may be submitted now through February 3. Selected candidates will be paid a stipend and offered free transportation where available. For more information, those interested in applying can find out more information on the program at www.roads.maryland.gov under the news section or by sending email inquiries to shabuildup@sha.state.md.us or by calling toll-free at 1-888-545-0098.
