Trolley Donated to Indian Head
La Plata, MD - 3/14/2012
By Andy Marquis
As Charles County’s Board of Commissioners debates where to place a caboose on the Indian Head Rail Trail, they have agreed to donate a trolley to the Town of Indian Head. The trolley would be placed either on the trail entrance at Mattingly Avenue or on the Village Green.
The commissioners voted unanimously to donate the trolley to the Town of Indian Head at no cost to the town. The trolley is valued at $9,100. Montgomery County donated the trolley to Charles County in 2006. Indian Head seeks to use the trolley to enhance economic development. The request was made by the Town of Indian Head’s economic development department.
Director of Public Works Bill Shreve said the Town of Indian Head would not get the caboose they had originally asked for. The commissioners discussed what to do with the caboose they previously approved the purchase of, and voted four to one to use the caboose as a satellite center. Charles County Commissioner Debra Davis (D: 2nd) opposed the motion.
The B&O Railroad Museum has not begun work on restoration of the caboose yet, but is expected to later this month. The caboose will likely be placed at the trail entrance in White Plains.
