Senior Tax Credit Deadline Extended

The St. Mary’s County Commissioners have approved an extension on the deadline for residents to apply for the Property Tax Credit for Senior Citizens. Before the change seniors had to apply for the tax credit by July 1 yet property tax bills generally are received after that date. Under the change the new deadline is September 1.

The commissioners’ unanimous approval also changed the requirement for an annual application for the tax credit. The Treasurer’s office found that sometimes seniors just forgot to apply, thus missing a year, according to County Treasurer Jan Norris.

According to County Attorney George Sparling the requirements to be eligible for the credit include being at least 65 years of age and having a household income of no more than $80,000. Those eligibility requirements were not changed with the commissioners’ decision this week.
