Motorcycle safety was the theme of a rally Sunday at the Hollywood Volunteer Fire Department. The message was especially appropriate what with the motorcycle fatality just the day before in St. Mary’s County.

Del. Anthony O’Donnell (R: 29C) delivered a proclamation from Gov. Martin O’Malley designating May at Motorcycle Safety Month in Maryland. And St. Mary’s County Commissioner President Francis “Jack” Russell (D) presented a proclamation from the county, and Commissioner Daniel Morris (R: 2nd) who is a biker himself, also delivere3d remarks.

A blessing of the bikes was performed by Preacher Gordon Bacon of the Rushing Wind Ministry. He said all the talk in the world will fail when it comes to safety without personal commitment. He emphasized a "don’t drink and drive" message. “You are the one who ultimately makes the choices,” he told the assembled riders.

“The biggest threat to all of you is the other guy,” said Commander Steven Hall, representing Sheriff Tim Cameron, who also noted the fatality the previous day.

The event provided the opportunity for Motorcyclists to receive information on licensing, pre=ride mechanical checks and learn about advanced riding skills. The Maryland motor Vehicle Administration SMARTrainer along with a mobile classroom was also at the event, which also featured practice courses for the riders.
