Family Displaced by House Fire
St. Leonard, MD - 4/16/2012
By Marty Madden
A St. Leonard family has been displaced, but all are unhurt after an early morning fire erupted Monday, April 16 at their two-story home on Bayview Avenue.
According to the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, the blaze was reported shortly after 3:03 a.m.
“The cause of the fire is still under investigation,” stated Dfm. Melissa Bean.
According to Bean’s report, the family of four was asleep when a child awoke to a “popping” sound outside. “The child quickly alerted the family to the smoke and fire,” Bean stated. “Everyone was able to exit the home safely. The home sustained significant damage.”
Over 50 firefighters from St. Leonard, Prince Frederick, Benedict and Bay District were dispatched to the one-alarm blaze and brought the flames under control in 15 minutes.
Bean stated the fire originated outside the home on a rear deck. A smoke alarm inside the house failed to function.
The estimated loss, according to the fire marshal’s office, is $150,000.
The displaced occupants are being assisted by friends and family.
Anyone who might have information that could aid in the investigation is asked to call the Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal, Southern Regional Office, at 443-550-6820.
