The Board of Education honored five students on Tuesday, April 10, for their accomplishments in academic achievement, career readiness and personal responsibility, which are the focus areas of the school system’s master plan.

Honored were Sydnei Huff, fifth grade, Indian Head Elementary School; Veronica LeBeau, fifth grade, J.C. Parks Elementary School; Rachel Ruffin, fifth grade, Mt. Hope/Nanjemoy Elementary School; Joshua Lewis, eighth grade, Theodore G. Davis Middle School; and Bria Midgette, senior, Westlake High School.

Huff was honored in the area of academic achievement. She works hard to maintain principal’s honor roll each quarter and aspires to become a biomedical engineer. Huff is a member of the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement (MESA), science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), Destination Imagination and math teams. Outside of school, Huff is a member of Indian Head’s swim team, and enjoys reading, writing stories, dancing and singing.

LeBeau was honored in the area of personal responsibility. She consistently earns the highest marks possible each quarter in personal responsibility and learner characteristics. LeBeau also earned advanced scores on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA) in math and reading in 2010 and 2011. She is a team player that regularly shares her thoughts and ideas with peers in the classroom. LeBeau is also an active member of the math team and MESA.

Ruffin was honored in the area of academic achievement. She demonstrates a strong work ethic and has maintained straight A’s since the third grade. Ruffin has also achieved advanced scores on the MSA in reading and math, and serves as a role model for her classmates. She is a member of the school’s Destination Imagination team and the Kiwanis K-Kids Club.

Lewis was honored in the area of career readiness. He has maintained a 4.0 grade-point average throughout middle school and was selected for the all-county and tri-county bands. Lewis participates in the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) and Students Against Starting Smoking (SASS) clubs, Student Government Association (SGA) and the National Junior Honor Society. He volunteers in soup kitchens and clothing drives through his church, and plays on a community basketball team. Lewis plans to become a researcher or scientist and has applied to the bio-medical program at La Plata High School.

Midgette was honored in the area of career readiness. She is a role model student and has taken all business courses offered at Westlake. She earns top grades in her business courses and also takes Advanced Placement courses. Midgette plans to attend Howard University this fall and major in business.
