A series of art displays from the Westlake High School (WHS) National Art Honor Society helped and the sounds of country music from the U.S. Navy Band Country Current kicked off the annual Sunset Concert Festival & Farmers’ Market on O’Donnell Lake in Waldorf on Friday night.
Westlake High School’s Photography, Advanced Placement Art and Multimedia teacher Christie Marks put the event together. They called it “Art on Deck”. The displays included stations for painting, face painting, art displays and a balloon darts board.
“This is the first time we’ve done this,” Marks said. “The kids wanted community involvement, get the people out and show the importance of art. It’s very successful because a lot of people are coming out and brining their kids and the kids love it. If they start at an early age, they’ll always show an appreciation in art. This is our community. Community involvement is what you need. You need the families to work together with the schools.”
“It’s really fun and I’m glad we had a lot of people who came out to support the arts,” WHS 10th grade student Bailey Delacruz said. “It means a lot to us. It’s really good that Westlake got involved with arts in the community and our National Art Honor Society in the coming years to try to spread art to everyone so when people come to Westlake, they’ll be ready to be creative. I feel like I want to do something with photography when I get out of high school. Mrs. Marks is the greatest teacher.”
The U.S. Navy Band Country Current played a selection of songs at sunset, playing with banjos and guitars with a bluegrass style of music. The farmers’ market included fresh fruit and vegetables.
