Local Yacht Club Observes Anniversary
Solomons, MD - 5/22/2012
By Marty Madden
The Solomons Island Yacht Club (SIYC) observed its 75th anniversary Sunday, May 20 with two traditional events. The club, which is one of the oldest yacht clubs on the Chesapeake Bay, conducted a wreath-laying ceremony at the Waterman’s Memorial on the Solomons River Walk. During the afternoon the annual Blessing of the Fleet was held for all vessels in the Solomons area.
According to a press release submitted by SIYC Vice Commodore James R. Shepherd, the ceremony originated many years ago, “to bless the fishing fleet for a safe and successful season and it is continued to this day for that purpose.”
The wreath-laying ceremony saluted past SIYC members and leaders and featured the playing of taps and included a water cannon salute from a fireboat.
Solomons Island Yacht Club was founded in 1937.
