Officers Arrest Man Wanted for Newburg Shooting

On May 24 at 1:57 p.m., officers responded to the 12200 block of Kings Farm Place in Newburg for the report of a domestic-related shooting in which a male suspect assaulted a man and then fired several shots inside a house and fled. According to witnesses, the suspect, Charles Augustine Thomas, 53, of Waldorf, entered the house of a former female friend; he was armed with a shotgun. He confronted a male, 77, who lives in the house and an altercation ensued. During the altercation, Thomas struck the man with the stock of the gun and then fired several shots; he fled prior to police arrival. Officers established a perimeter while the CCSO Emergency Services Team, K-9 Unit and Maryland State Police helped search for the suspect. Thomas was eventually located at about 7:45 p.m. on Boarman Road. He was arrested without incident and charged with attempt murder and first-degree assault. He was remanded to the Charles County Detention Center. The victim was treated for injuries he sustained during the altercation.
