At SKD Studios we believe that if you take the time to plan your project carefully, and are cautious about the Kitchen designer you select, now is an excellent time to remodel your kitchen.  With summer winding down and the kids going back to school, now is the perfect time to get back inside and start planning the kitchen of your dreams.Kitchens are one of the most used spaces in the home, they most often act as the command center for the entire home; hosting everything from homework parties to black tie dinner events and how we live in them plays a major role in how we should go about updating them.

Before you begin the kitchen remodel process Ask yourself the following questions:

What exactly do I hope to accomplish by remodeling my kitchen? And what am I willing to invest to get what I want? You need targets both for the scope of work and for your budget.

To determine the scope of work think about the following:

·How many chefs usually work in the kitchen?

·What is your cooking style?

·Who else hangs out in the kitchen and what do they do there?

·How important is easy cleanup?

·If you could splurge on one luxury, what would it be?

And when determining a budget you should keep in mind that your home is still an investment, possibly your biggest investment and you want to have the highest return possible on your investment, especially if your turn around time is sooner rather than later.Fortunately a kitchen remodel is something that recaptures nearly 100% return if you stay within the maximum 15% of the home's current market value. The 5% to 15% Rule is a handy tool to help determine how much you should spend on your kitchen project.

Basically, the rule states:

The entire kitchen project (including cabinets, appliances, Countertops, flooring, lighting, trim molding, & wall coverings) should cost no less than 5% and no more than 15% of the current value of your home with approximately 50% of the total cost allocated for kitchen cabinets.

A good kitchen designer will help you to determine what is best for your family’s needs and guide you through the entire process.

Look for the following in your Kitchen Designer/Studio …

  • Local with an established business location.  They are easier to find and less likely to take off if problems arise.
  • Personable, knowledgeable and accessible. You will be working with this person for some time so be sure you can get along together, that the person can answer your questions and that they will be available if you need them.At SKD Studios we become so involved in our clients projects that we create lasting relationships with them and often go back to enjoy the new space with our clients.
  • Make sure you find someone that will help you pull together a cohesive plan and take into account the entire home.At SKD Studios we pull together paint, wall coverings, fabrics, tiles as well as design the kitchen layout and help with cabinet selections and countertops.
  • Make sure you choose a designer/Kitchen studio that works with contractors.SKD studios has several licensed and insured contractors that we work with on a regular basis. We work closely with them to account for every detail of the project. We will even project coordinate with our contractors or yours to handle scheduling, delivery and will always be your advocate and communicate your concerns with the contractor if the need arises.
