One of the events planned as part of a traveling exhibit: “Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War” is a presentation by College of Southern Maryland President Dr. Brad Gottfried on Lincoln’s role as commander-in-chief, his strong hand and the military decisions that led to the outcome of the war. The presentation will be at 11 a.m., July 21 at the Calvert Library in Prince Frederick. The exhibit will remain at the library through Aug. 24.

Also as part of the ongoing exhibit, CSM History professor Chretien Guidry will host a discussion/debate from 7-8:30 p.m., Aug. 2, to compare and contrast President Lincoln’s Oath of Office to that of President Obama’s. This includes the political environment, Constitution-related challenges and future expectations.

In addition to serving as CSM’s fourth president, Gottfried is a noted Civil War historian, having written nine books about the war. His latest book is “The Maps of Antietam: An Atlas of the Antietam (Sharpsburg) Campaign, including the Battle of South Mountain, September 2-20, 1862." Gottfried is a frequent presenter on Civil War topics.

This fall, Gottfried will lead a course through CSM’s Corporate Center, “Leadership Lessons from Gettysburg,” Sept. 21 and 22, with classroom instruction and a trip to Gettysburg National Military Park.

Guidry is a respected professor, having previously earned ninth place in RateMyProfessor.com’s ranking of the country’s highest rated junior and community college professors in 2009. The traveling exhibition for libraries was organized by the National Constitution Center and the American Library Association Public Programs Office. The traveling exhibition has been made possible by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
