St. Leonard Plan Ready for Public Hearing
Prince Frederick, MD - 7/20/2012
By Marty Madden
The revised draft of the St. Leonard Town Center Master Plan will be the subject of public hearing later this month. During the Wednesday, July 18 meeting of the Calvert County Planning Commission, Jenny Plummer-Welker of the Department of Community Planning and Building reviewed comments received from the Maryland departments of Planning and Transportation regarding the current draft.
The joint public hearing to be held by the planning commission and the Calvert County Commissioners is scheduled for Tuesday evening July 31 at the St. Leonard Volunteer Fire Department. Additionally, the two panels will conduct a hearing on the Ship Point Research Park zoning case. The park property is located off Rousby Hall Road in Lusby.
Among the comments offered by state officials were requests to include site information for the town’s possible wastewater treatment plant and information on the current town infrastructure’s ability to service a possible population increase. Additionally, state planners are suggesting the county give consideration to acquiring land for a public parking lot within the town center.
“It’s time to stop cutting bait and start fishing,” said Calvert County Planning Commission Chairman Maurice Lusby, who acknowledged the process of revising St. Leonard’s master plan has taken several years. The chairman commended Plummer-Welker for her oversight to the revision process.
The Lusby Town Center Master Plan was adopted in September 1995 and subsequently amended nine times.
The town center revision processes for Lusby and Huntingtown have already begun. The Prince Frederick Town Center Master Plan revision is likely to be a topic of discussion for county leaders before the end of the year.
Current information on the St. Leonard Town Center Master Plan is available on the Calvert County Government web site at www.co.cal.md.us. The information can be found on the Department of Planning and Zoning (now Community Planning and Building) page.
