Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) announced today that the University of Maryland has received nearly $800,000 in grants and St. Mary’s College of Maryland received a nearly $200,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). The University of Maryland received $225,000 for their Freedmen and Southern Society Project, $325,000 for their Maryland Digital Newspaper Project, and $248,721 for their Digital Humanities Data Curation. St. Mary’s  College of Maryland received $190,000 for collaborative research on a project titled, “Colonial Encounters: The Lower Potomac River at Contact, 1500-1720 AD.”

“I want to congratulate the University of Maryland and St. Mary’s College of Maryland on being awarded these highly competitive grants that will fund their important work in humanities research and education,” stated Congressman Hoyer. “I also want to thank the National Endowment for the Humanities for recognizing the terrific work our students and educators are pursuing at Maryland’s higher education institutions.”

The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent federal agency created in 1965. It is one of the largest funders of humanities programs in the United States, and supports research and learning in history, literature, philosophy, and other areas by funding selected, peer-reviewed proposals. Grants are typically awarded to cultural institutions, such as museums, archives, libraries, colleges, universities, public television and radio stations, and to individual scholars.
