MaBear98 7/30/2012 at 3:34 PM Damn it PEOPLE WHEN are people going to learn to stop flying down these roads and WATCH for buggies!! We SHARE this community with the Amish (They were here first!!) and we need to take note of the speed limit on the roads, mind the lights, stop at the stop signs and WATCH where you're going! Dubois is s windy, narrow, wooded road with NO shoulder, so we should be extra careful! Reply to This Comment

jdman 7/30/2012 at 9:03 PM Reply to MaBear98: Roads Hey ssmjdmdc5 the Amish pay property taxes, pay taxes on the diesel, K1 and gasoline they use. Lets not forget the sales tax on any taxable food or tools and equipment thats not for farm use. With your attitude you are no better then what the horses deposit on the road. Move to PG County where you don't have the Amish problem and lets see how long before you miss the Amish and some horse poop on the road. Most of the accidents over the last few years involving Amish have been caused by idiots who speed!

That is the key..majority of drivers around here are in too much of a hurry and are not courteous..period.

Ninabeana 7/31/2012 at 12:38 PM Reply to MaBear98: Correction First of all, the article is wrong. There was only a single passenger, an 18 year old female, on the buggy. She is fine, by the way. As is the horse. Second, you DO NOT know the situation or the conditions under which the accident took place. I live on Dubois and knew the individual in the car & trust me, it was an accident. He does not "fly" down the road & in fact was going UNDER the speed limit when the accident occured. Unfortunately, weather played a large part in this accident in that it was foggy & the windshield of the car kept fogging up. The buggy did not have it's lights on & by the time the driver saw the buggy it was too late. The driver tried to swerve to avoid hitting it but caught the back end with the passenger side of the car.

One of their horses ran into the road and my husband hit it and totaled our car and could have been killed. Well try to get compensated from them. They don't even have a mailbox to get a letter from A lawyer. HOW CONVENIENT!!

CopMom 8/3/2012 at 12:44 PM Reply to Ninabeana #1 I am not up on Buggylogics but the last time I did see one in St. Mary's County, I don't recall the buggy or horses having lights to turn on? But I do re-call vehicles having options, called "de-frosters" that would prevent a windshield to keep from fogging up, and if this condition persisted, maybe the driver should of pulled over? Since then, the buggys are required to have lights on them. However, with that being said, I was not implying that it was the fault of the woman because the lights were not on. I was simply stating that that was another factor. And you mean to tell me you have NEVER had condensation on your windshield DESPITE running the de-froster (which he was running) & it wasn't clearing fast enough? He had already left home and was going below the speed limit because he couldn't see. Dubois is not a road where he could have pulled over to wait until the windshield unfogged nor one that is safe to just sit on. I'm not trying to start a debate here & I didn't even say anything negative about the Amish. I was simply saying that you do not know the individual who was driving, I do. He was/is extremely torn up after what happened and I think it is unfair to judge him without knowing what happened. Think about if this happened to your child, brother or close friend. Don't be so quick to judge.

pearlie369 8/6/2012 at 11:22 AM Sharing is caring If I am expected to share the road with bicycles and even give them feet of room (often going across the center line to ensure that they can have the entire lane they are taking up, with a 5lb 2 wheeled non vehicle, to themselves) then it goes without saying that you need to share the road with buggies. If someone can't see due to fog or condensation on the windshield then they need to stay the heck home where they can only injure themselves. And yes, the Amish do pay taxes that repair, build, and maintain the roads. Reply to This Comment

dako 8/10/2012 at 9:17 PM Reply to pearlie369: They do pay a road tax? How is it collected? I know yours and mine is collected through the taxes we pay on our gas purchases. Maybe their horses hay is taxed? Nope...they are considered farm equipment. I also know the steel wheels used on their wagons and the shoes on the horses are harder on the road surfaces that the tires on your car. Ask the people who build/ repair roads if you don't believe me.

bilbur 8/15/2012 at 12:00 PM Reply to pearlie369: Taxes Amish pay property taxes just like everyone else and they are subject to the same tax laws. If they don't pay they can lose their land. I am, however, torn on the whole buggies using the road issue. If I were to purchase a scooter that only goes 40mph then I cannot drive it on roads that have a speed limit over 40. The same thing with my car, if I am doing 10mph on a 40 or 50mph road I could get a ticket for impeding traffic and reckless endangerment. I guess the way they get around it is by having the orange triangle that signifies a vehicle for farm use. These vehicles don’t have to be registered or even road worthy for that matter. At any rate they are not going away so we will have to figure something out to keep everyone safe.
