On July 31 at approximately 8:26 a.m. Calvert County deputies responded to 1800 Candlelight Court in Owings for a domestic dispute.  Upon arrival patrol deputies found no sign of movement in the house and a witness stated that the homeowner, Frank Hayward, had a gun.

Several attempts to reach the occupants of the residence were made by the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation team, to no avail.Members of the Sheriff’s Office Special Operations Team, (S.O.T.), the Calvert Investigative Team and the Maryland State Police arrived on the scene.Although the home was engulfed in flames, in a life-saving effort S.O.T. continued through the fire and entered the residence.

Three people were immediately found inside the home, Frank Hayward, Jr., 32, his wife Cindy Hayward, 31 and their 2-year-old daughter Natalee. All three were deceased.A fourth family member, 12-year-old Frank Hayward III, was alive and suffering from lacerations to the neck and burns to his body.He was immediately transported for medical care and is in critical condition at Children’s Hospital.

Initial investigation has determined that this was a domestic situation.Frank Hayward apparently phoned his employer earlier in the morning and stated that he was going to kill himself. The employer contacted Mr. Hayward’s cousin, who immediately drove to the Hayward home and then called 911.The incidents that transpired in between those times are still under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office takes domestic violence very seriously and this is an extremely unusual event for our county. It was also very traumatic for law enforcement and fire and rescue personnel who responded to the scene.

“At this time our thoughts and prayers are with Frank Hayward III and the family and friends of the Haywards. We in Law Enforcement and Fire and Rescue personnel appreciate the assistance from the public that was provided to officers and the Hayward family at the scene of this horrific event” said Sheriff Mike Evans.

A follow up press release will be issued pending the results of this investigation.
