An official from Dominion Cove Point presented a check for $8,500 to CHESPAX, the Calvert County Public Schools’ (CCPS) environmental program.

The program’s lead teacher, Tom Harten, explained the grant money would be applied to CHESPAX’s second grade initiative, titled “Help Save the Earth.” The program for second-graders teachers the students about recycling, reusing different products and reducing use of projects that can be reused.

The students visited Appeal Landfill to learn about items to be recycled.

Harten stated the funding would be used to provide the students with field trips to Annmarie Sculpture Garden in Dowell, which has a recycled art program.

The CHESPAX curriculum is based at Kings Landing in Huntingtown and provides students with hands-on environmental experiences. Harten called the CHESPAX grant “a new opportunity.”

Mike Gardiner of Dominion Cove Point presented the check to school officials at the Calvert County Board of Education’s Aug. 16 meeting.
