Hundreds Brave Rain, Race in Chaptico
Chaptico, MD - 8/25/2012
By Marty Madden
Someday the sun will again shine on the Chaptico Classic—but not today. For the second year in a row the highly touted country road race was marred by light rain. Still hundreds of runners and walkers came out Saturday morning, Aug. 25 to participate in 27th running of Southern Maryland’s oldest road race in historic Chaptico. Registered runners competed in the 10 kilometer (K) and 5K race and walkers did the 5K.
While there was no sunshine or rainbow the Chaptico Classic did have a pot of gold. The registration fees and corporate sponsorship funds will go to benefit Three Oaks Shelter, St. Mary’s Caring Soup Kitchen, Southern Maryland Community Network and the Mary Lou Gough Food Pantry.
Awards for first, second and third place finishes among runners of both the 5K and 10K races were awarded in several age groups.
David Raley, 29 of Mechanicsville was the top finisher in the 10K with a time of 36 minutes, 10 seconds. Katie Ogden, 22 of Owings was the 10K's top female finisher with a time of 37minutes 58 seconds. Brenden Johnson, 17 of Waldorf was the top finisher in the 5K with a time of 17 minutes flat. The top female finisher was Julia Smith, 43 of Tappahannock,VA, who logged in a time of 21 minutes and 16 seconds. Official results are posted on the Chesapeake Bay Running Club web site at www.cbrcmd.org
