Skate Jam Aids Access Network
10/15/2012
By Marty Madden
After the original event was rained out, the SoMD CAN (College Access Network) Calvert Skate Jam was moved to Sunday, Oct. 14. The autumn weather could not have been better for the fast-moving outdoor event. Participants and onlookers converged on Dunkirk Skate Park to raise money for the local nonprofit organization.
SoMD CAN staff educates local middle and high school students, and their parents about college applications and financing. The organization was started a few years ago with the help of grant funding from a private foundation.
Participants paid $20 entry fees for the competitions and 14 corporate sponsors contributed funds. The skateboarders were drawn in by the opportunity to compete for cash prizes. In addition to the entry fee, each participant was required to sign an amateur athletic waiver and release of liability. While protective gear was not mandatory, it was strongly recommended.
Live local bands were featured throughout the event.
Aggro Joe’s of Prince Frederick presented the event along with SoMD Can.
