Michael Joseph Young, 22 of Mechanicsville, died from injuries sustained in a T-bone crash on Route 235 in Hollywood on Friday morning.

Young was heading north on Route 235 at 8:40 a.m. when he attempted to cross the southbound lanes to turn onto Airport View Drive. Police said the tires on Young’s pickup lost traction on the wet pavement, causing his tries to spin during the crossover.

The pickup was struck broadside by a SUV heading south, sending it off the roadway into a light pole.

Young was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck.

Due to the inclement weather, rescue helicopters were unavailable. Young was transported to P.G. Shock Trauma by ambulance. While en-route to the Hospital in P.G. County, Young went into cardiac arrest.  The ambulance diverted to Civista Hospital in LaPlata. He was pronounced dead at Civista.

The SUV was operated by Michael Joseph Reese, 61 of Hollywood. Carollton Reese, 92, was in the front seat. Both were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital. A back seat passenger in the Yukon was treated and released at the scene.

The St. Mary’s County Sheriff's Office Collision Reconstructionists were notified and responded to the scene to assume the crash investigation.

Initial investigation indicates failing to yield the right of way as the primary cause of the collision.  Speed or alcohol does not appear to be involved.

Friday was at least the third time in less than a year that the same light pole was taken out from a crash at Airport View Drive.

Dangerous intersections on Route 235, such as Airport View Drive and other “crossover” location, are a serious problem, Sheriff Tim Cameron told The Bay Net on Friday.

The sheriff pointed out that there have been two fatal crashes on Route 235 near the Bean Medical Center entrance.

Cameron said he previously recently sent a letter on the issue to the Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA), and carbon-copied Southern Maryland delegates Johnny Wood and John Bohanan, and Sen. Roy Dyson.

In response, SHA shared plans for the “235 corridor” with Cameron, which aim to eliminate dangerous intersections. The plan includes a traffic light at Airport View Drive.

Those plans need to be acted upon as soon as possible, Cameron said, adding, “I’m not pointing any fingers.”
