April Fools' Day isn’t a holiday, but it is a day celebrated widely around the world on April 1. In most areas of the world, the day is used to commit practical jokes and gags on unsuspecting acquaintances – friends, lovers, and enemies alike.

 Wikipedia reports that there is a great deal of debate among historians about the actual origins of April Fools Day. In some areas it is referred to as All Fools Day. There is a consensus that the day began around the coming of spring and the vernal equinox.

 April 1 was observed by more than one culture as a festival to usher in the new year and the end of winter. There is evidence that in the early 18th century that people in Scotland began making April Fools with a custom they called “hunting of the gowk” or cuckoo and those targeted were called April gowks. Cuckoo or gowk was a term for those found contemptible.

 Today, April Fools Day is a day for light-hearted practical jokes on friends, designed to embarrass them and garner a laugh for those witnessing those pranks. Radio stations have done pranks on their listeners, bosses have fooled their employees, and family members derive much delight from embarrassing siblings throughout the day.

 The internet is a great source for pranksters. Yahoo reports that searches for pranks and practical jokes have increased dramatically over the past week or so. The Internet service provider goes on to list the “Top 10 Practical Jokes for Geeks” and most searched April Fools Jokes.

 It appears, today, no one is safe from the possibility of becoming a practical joke target. Better watch out today – or run the risk of becoming an April gowk while others laugh!
