Used Cooking Oil and Kitchen Grease no Longer Accepted for Recycling1/28/2011
In November 2005, the County's Recycling Program, in conjunction with Valley Proteins, Inc. began a Used Cooking Oil and Kitchen Grease Recycling Program at all St. Mary’s County Convenience Centers. Citizens were able to dispose of cooking oil and kitchen grease to be used in the production of livestock feed and/or “Bio-diesel”, an alternative fuel used in diesel powered equipment. The program collected about 50,000 gallons each year. Due to costly incidents involving grease contamination outside St. Mary’s County, the vendor has decided to stop the service at the County's convenience center sites.
St. Mary’s County Department of Public Works and Transportation is currently discussing the situation with other jurisdictions and hopes to restore the program.
